Common misconceptions about concussion according to our best friend AI.

You need to be knocked out to have a concussion.

A concussion always involves a direct blow to the head.

Concussion symptoms start immediately after the injury.

Concussions can be seen on an MRI or CT scan

Facts:
90% of concussion do not involve a loss of consciousness.

Concussion can be cause by any blow that summits force to the head eg whiplash from a car accident.

Concussion symptoms often appear quickly but there is such thing as a delayed concussion.

Concussions are a functional injury, meaning they affect how the brain functions, not its structure.

Why is baseline testing helpful?

Getting a baseline before you get a concussion helps us to see how your brain normally functions.

We, with the help of a very well designed app test your balance, reaction time and mood. This test is done twice and from there we get an average to see your ‘normal’. This should be done every 6 months to make sure we have a current valid baseline.

Then if we suspect you have a concussion we can run the test again, this helps us to diagnosis the severity of your concussion.

If you have any questions, know a sports club or an individual that this could help please comment below or give us a call on 0412 761 512.

As many of you have noticed we have a few new toys in the clinic.

These are to help us with something new that we are offering which is concussion diagnosis and management.

Concussion is something that is getting more and more air time. This is due to how debilitating it can be.

The reason I have decided to do the extra training and become an advocate for better management of concussion is due to personal experience.

About 6 years ago I was concussed. At the time I didn’t think much of it. Yes I felt groggy, found it hard to concentrate, had some nausea and was tired but just thought it will go away.

A few weeks went by and things weren’t getting better they were getting worse. I was vomiting or dry retching every morning and was constantly suffering nausea.

This was when I went to a doctor to see what could be done about my symptoms.
At this stage concussion wasn’t the buzz word that it currently is and what I found was that nobody had an answer or solution.

I trialled medications, it made me worse.
I reduced activity levels, I didn’t feel any better.
I increased activity, still no change.
I went from a brain MRI, all clear.

After 6 months of this I woke up one morning and the symptoms were gone.

A couple of years ago I came across the Complete Concussion Management course. This has provided me with the skills to help people in the position I was in.

So if this story resonates with you, or you know someone that has suffered with a concussion or you want to understand concussion better. Comment below or give us a call on 0412 761 512 so we can talk about treatment, management and prevention of concussion in our community.
