Sugar is a simple form of carbohydrates meaning it has less components to break down before it is digested. But what if i told you not all sugars are the same? Lets look at fruits, most of their primary carbohydrate component is a SUGAR known as fructose. Not to be confused with high fructose corn syrup which has a different chemical structure. Fructose is a slow digesting carbohydrate, meaning they will not cause a dramatic spike with your blood sugar levels, only raising them slightly while providing a sweet treat and lasting energy.

However, always remembering too much of a good thing can still be too much.

If you’ve just been told you have Type 2 diabetes, it can feel overwhelming.

Start simple:
✅Learn to read food labels. Being able to read food labels is an invaluble skill to have. Start by focusing on carbohydrates and sugar.

✅Learn about different Carbohydrates. Sugar is what we refer to as a simple carbohydrate meaning they get broken down more quickly. HOWEVER this is tricky because we refer to fruit's carbohydrates as sugars and they take a lot longer to break down than other sugars.

✅Carbohydrates that contain a good source or dietary fibre and/or protein are generally preferable. E.g. lentils, most fruits, multigrain bread

✅Eat small frequent meals regularly help to avoid big spikes.

✅Watch portion sizes, not just the carbohydrates. Even if we are eating the right foods, too much of a good thing can still be too much. Excessive portion sizes can lead to weight gain. This can impact our blood glucose levels (BGLs) by increasing how long the sugar stays in our blood.

✅Include fibre and lean protein in all meals. These help to slow digestion.

✅Cut back on full sugar soft drinks and takeaway meals.

✅Get moving after meals. Research shows that if we do some cardiovascular exercise such as walking after a meal, it helps to reduce the overall spike to our BGLs.

Having a good understanding of what effects BGLs is vital to managing them.

Did you know skipping meals can lead to low energy, poor focus, and overeating later in the day?

Your body runs better with steady fuel, not caffeine and crash cycles. This is because caffeine does not provide the body with energy. Caffeine works by blocking signals to the brain that tell you that you are tired. A small meal with wholegrains, protein, fruit or vegetables will provide your body with greater endurance for the day and reduce picking habits at the same time.

Eating to Keep Energy Up All Day.

If you're crashing mid-afternoon, it’s probably not just work stress. It could be how you’re fuelling your body.

Try these tips:

✅Don’t skip breakfast. Keep it easy, prioritise protein with some carbohydrates, even if it is as simple as a yopro yoghurt with a banana.

✅Balance your meals with protein, fibre, healthy fats and a portion of carbohydrates e.g. tuna salad sandwich on a high fibre or multigrain bread using some avocado instead of butter or try a Greek salad with sweet potato and a small handful of walnuts and chicken breast.

✅Ditch high-sugar snacks. E.g. lollies, soft drink, muffins, donuts, chocolate. Yes, these foods can provide quick energy, but the problem is the crash cycle associated with them. Remember the goal is long lasting energy.

✅Keep your hydration steady. Aim for at least 2L of water daily. People that train greater than 1.5hours, are heavy sweaters or that work in the heat will benefit from electrolytes and additional intake of water. Choose electrolytes with no added sugars.

✅Limit Caffeine intake. Caffeine does not provide energy and only masks symptoms of fatigue. The more frequently we consume caffeine the more we will require it to reduce those fatigue symptoms. So think why do I need this caffeine? What am I missing within my diet and sleep habits that are affecting my energy levels?

Energy slumps are a signal your body needs better fuel and or rest.

Breastfeeding doesn’t just nourish your baby, it supports your long-term health too.

Women who breastfeed have a lower risk of:
✅ Breast cancer
✅ Ovarian cancer
✅ Type 2 diabetes
✅ High blood pressure

And for the babies?
✅The optimal source of nutrition is provided
✅Lowers the risk of ear infections, asthma, obesity, and gut issues
✅Supports brain development and immune function

It really is a win win for both sides.

Always remember though, a healthy baby is a fed baby, whether that’s breast milk, formula, or both.

It is World Breastfeeding Week!!

Let's talk about what is often described as “nature’s perfect food”. It offers a unique combination of nutrients, antibodies, and hormones that support infant growth and immunity in a way that formula simply can’t replicate.

✅ Nutrient-rich: Breast milk not only has more nutrients than formula, it also adapts to your baby’s needs day to day and feed to feed. These nutrients are additionally better absorbed by infants due to being designed for their developing microbiome.

✅ Cost-effective: It’s free, always ready, and doesn’t require bottles, sterilising, or mixing.

✅ Immunity boost: Colostrum (early milk) is packed with antibodies that protect newborns from illness. This immunity boost continues throughout breastfeeding reducing the likeliness of common illnesses.

✅ Benefits for Mum: Breastfeeding lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, can potentially reduce the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, while also making it easier to lose pregnancy weight due to the production of breast milk being calorically expensive.

✅ Bonding: Skin-to-skin contact during feeding promotes emotional connection between a mother and their child.

✅ Looking into the future: Research suggests that infants that are breastfed >12 months have fewer occurrences of allergies, diabetes, excessive weight gain, picky eating and so much more .

Breastfeeding is AMAZING and is the primary nutritional recommendation from the world health organisation (WHO) for infants. But remember that a healthy baby is a fed baby whether it’s breast, bottle or both, support matters more than pressure.

For support through your breastfeeding journey I highly recommend seeking guidance from your Midwives, Lactation Consultant and look into doing breastfeeding courses prior to giving birth. These are often run by your state's health organisations.

Let’s talk about carbs!

While over indulging in things like sugar beverages, cakes and refined carbohydrate can in fact lead to weight gain. Carbohydrates are our bodies and brains main source of energy!

Rather than demonising carbs, it’s important to focus on choosing the right kinds- think whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes- which provide essential nutrients like fibre, a wide range of vitamins, and minerals plus, they can help keep you feeling full and satisfied!!

So, let’s banish the carb-phobia and embrace a balanced approach to nutrition. Remember, it’s all about quality and moderation.

“This year’s National NAIDOC Week marks 50 years of the week-long celebrations, and the theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead.”

At Raymond Terrace Therapy, we stand with First Nations people and celebrate NAIDOC week.

This years poster is designed by artist Jeremy Morgan Worrall. Read how he described his artwork:

“Ancestral Lines is a visual representation of the lines and ties that follow a generation and the songs that come with it.

When I think of the next generation I think towards my Ancestor Lucy Wright, Enoch Wright, Nonie Wright, all the way from my Nanna Audrie to my Mother Vanessa.

When I look back at my mob it helps me see towards the future, it gives me hope and strength knowing what my mob have survived through and accomplished amid adversity.

Each person in the painting depicts a series of lines akin to songlines, that represent what they know, who they were and what they have passed on, the first being that of lore (interpretive), hunting, protecting, and tracking, the second of care, weaving, fishing, and love.

The third is when we see the two combine into one, and the last two take unfinished elements of them all, to show the passing down of knowledge and care.

Above them is the essence of the land they live and protect/care for. It is a depiction of my home the cold skies of Tenterfield with the swirling clouds and giant moon, a place around the fire is where the next Generation find their strength, vision and legacy.”
