Hey, it's October. That means it's officially the start of Shocktober!

Every year, 33,000 Australian lives are lost to out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs). SCA is very difficult to predict and can occur spontaneously with little warning. It can affect anyone, at any time, regardless of age or health — and the only way to treat it is through the application of CPR (to keep oxygen circulating through the body) and defibrillation (to restart the heart).

The team at Integrity Heart & Safety celebrates Shocktober and is taking part in the month-long campaign to:
💘 highlight the importance of knowing where Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are located;
💘 ensure that all AEDs are made publicly accessible;
💘 empower people to recognise SCA; and
💘 educate people on how to perform bystander action (i.e., full CPR + using a defibrillator to save a life).

Today, September 29, is World Heart Day. 💓

This is an international day of observance started by the World Heart Federation and dedicated to raising awareness around cardiovascular disease. It is a major contributor to sudden cardiac arrest deaths (SCA) in Australia and around the world, and currently the world's biggest killer — 18.6 million lives lost to SCA annually.

Heart Day aims to drive home the message that heart problems can be prevented. You can partake in the cause by:

💭 Why would a heart need an AED (defibrillator)? ❤️‍🩹

When a normal heart rhythm changes into very short and frequent pulses, it means blood is not circulating within the body properly. This is called sudden cardiac arrest 😲

🚑 30,000 Australians suffer a sudden cardiac arrest each year and more than 90% of them die.

When there is an AED (defibrillator) nearby, you increase the chances of that person's survival 👐

About 70% of all CPR is ineffectively performed. Some automatic external defibrillators (AED) contain technology that determines whether your compressions are effective.

Not only will voice prompts guide you through the process of defibrillation, but these devices can tell you to “Push Harder” or whether you are doing “Good Compressions” during CPR – all based on real cardiac output.

A portable defibrillator isn't safe — FALSE! ❌

Just because a defibrillator isn't in a hospital doesn't make it any less safe. In fact, a portable one like an automated external defibrillator (AED) is ideal inside places like gyms and sporting clubs! 🏡

There had been no recorded cases of a person getting injured from use of an AED. In cases of cardiac arrest, you can rest assured that using an AED will not cause harm and is completely legal as per the Good Samaritan Laws in Australia.
