Do you know how to plank correctly?

Planks are a great full body exercise and can be useful for strengthening the core muscles, gluts and working on stability of the upper body.

Here's some tips to work towards your perfect high plank:
💪 spread your fingers wide and ground down evenly through your hands and feet to create a strong foundation
💪 try to imagine a straight line from your head to your heels to maintain length along your spine. Avoid your hips sagging or piking upwards. Squeeze your gluts to stabilise your hips
💪 draw your belly button towards your spine to activate your core muscles
💪 keep your neck in line with your spine. This can be done with a slight tuck of your chin
💪 your shoulders should be over your elbows and wrists. Avoid locking out through your elbows
💪 keep your legs active by squeezing your quads and pressing through your heels

You can also try other versions including a low plank/forearm plank or a side plank which is great for targeting the side oblique muscles.

If you need more challenge, you can progress to single shoulder taps or single knee taps.

If you need any advice or guidance, I'm here to help! ❤️ You can call/message anytime or book online @ redlandbayphysiotherapy.com.au

When was the last time you walked barefoot in nature?

🌻 Walking barefoot, especially in nature, has many health benefits and restores our natural gait, improving our overall balance.

🌲 You could look at barefoot walking as a way of plugging your charger in, just like you do with your phone every day.

🌸 Research has shown that when we make a connection with the Earth barefoot, there is a reduction in white blood cells and an increase in red blood cells, which can increase antioxidants, reduce inflammation, improve immunity and sleep.

🌴 It can also help to lower cortisol levels and reduce stress and fatigue (which we all need more of in this world that we live in!). This can help to increase our overall energy levels and restore balance in our bodies.

🪷 Committing to just 5 minutes of barefoot walking in your backyard consistently every day will help you achieve some of these powerful benefits which will help you thrive instead of just survive in this world.

You can call/message or book online any time for guidance and support to live your best life. You don't need to suffer! I'm here to help ❤️

Have you heard of the exercise Bird Dog? If so, do you know what it is used for? Do you know how to do it correctly?
💪Bird dog is a functional exercise that strengthens the core, hips, back, shoulders and wrists
💪 It is a useful rehab exercise for managing back, hip, shoulder and neck pain
💪 There are many levels to this exercise and each level should be perfected before moving onto the next
Level 1: Single leg slide maintaining neutral spinal and hip alignment
Level 2: Single leg lift to hip height, making sure not to rotate your hip/pelvis, keeping both hips level
Level 3: Single arm lift to shoulder height
Level 4: Opposite arm and leg lift, making sure you use your core and breath to prevent arching your back. Also, think about as much length through your arm and leg as possible and keeping the back of your neck in line with your spine. Watch your chest doesn't sink towards the floor and keep your shoulders away from your ears
💪 Once you have mastered this, you can progress it further by holding onto a weight, using ankle weights or a band around your foot or hand, drawing opposite elbow and knee towards each other, starting in a plank on your toes instead of all 4s.
❤️If you would like more guidance on how to strengthen your back and manage your pain, call/message or book online anytime. I'm here to help! ❤️

How's your hip hinge? Do you know how to
do a hip hinge correctly? Do you practice this exercise
regularly?
💪 The hip hinge is a critical component to the movement sequencing when bending forward. An efficient hinge allows the gluts and hamstrings to lengthen under load and allows the trunk to move towards the floor
💪After back pain/injury, this movement pattern can be
avoided due to fear, weakness, pain or other reasons. It can also be weakened after a hamstring injury/ tendonitis, hip or knee injuries and surgery
💪Hip hinging is such a great functional strengthening
exercise and really focuses on core control, spinal length/strength, glut and hamstring strength, sciatic nerve mobility
💪 Single leg hip hinging can be a great progression to
address any imbalances from side to side and is great for foot and ankle stability
❤️If you need help with your hip hinge or have pain or any injuries or just need some support with your wellness journey, call/message anytime or book online. I'm here to help! ❤️

Some of the tools I highly recommend most patients should have to manage mobility, strength and wellness in their lives.
💪 small pilates balls are useful for activating your core when doing exercise
⚖️ cork balance beams are useful for balance and foot mobility and strength. They can also be useful for elevating your heels to access a deep squat if you are lacking ankle mobility or calf length
💆‍♀️ hand held ball massage rollers are useful for releasing tight muscles and stimulating blood flow
🩷 zen spray is a mixture of chinese herbs that target pain and inflammation and is useful for relief in any acute flare up
⚾️ trigger balls are useful for localised muscle releasing, especially around the shoulders and hips
👣 silicone toe spacers are great for helping with toe alignment and mobility, especially for correction of bunions. Remember, our feet work hard for us and deserve lots of love and support. A good foundation is crucial for health and wellness!
🧘‍♀️ cork yoga blocks are great for helping your alignment when sitting on the floor (which I highly recommend as a daily practice). They can also be used to support restortive yoga poses
👣 mini foam rollers are great for foot mobility and relief
❤️ large foam rollers are useful for spinal mobility and releasing muscle tightness (especially nasty ITBs! 😉).

I stock and sell all of these in my clinic. My goal as a holistic therapist is to empower every patient that walks through my day to take their health and wellness back in their own hands! It's definitely possible with the right support and education.

I love yoga! It is such a holistic practice that incorporates lengthening, strengthening, mobilising, mind body connection, breath work and nervous system regulation.

🧘‍♀️ A great barrier for alot of people is how yoga is perceived in the mainstream. It is believed that one must be strong, young and flexible which is completely wrong
🧘‍♀️ There are many types and levels of yoga and it can easily be tailored to where your needs are
🧘‍♀️ Like all forms of exercise, there can be risks if yoga postures are performed incorrectly, without proper guidance/cueing or above the level of the person
🧘‍♀️ It is said that "anyone who can breath, can do yoga"
🧘‍♀️ I think if more people had a regular yoga practice, the world would be a better place!

If you are interested in yoga and would like some guidance, I can help! Call/message me anytime or you can book online. I'm here to help! ❤️

❤️ Do you prioritise self care in your daily life?
Have you experienced the benefits of a regular self care practice?

❤️ Self care can be considered by some as "selfish" but in our society today, where there is so much pressure, stress, expectations and external noise, it is a necessity for remaining grounded, calm and self regulated.
If you aren't practising self care, you should take the time to reflect on what lights you up and brings you joy. I tell my patients every day to have a self care checklist with a range of activities that require a small amount of time and some that take longer. You need to commit to including at least one of these practices into your day. Sometimes, you need to get creative to open up windows of time to fit one in.

❤️ I love my regular morning yoga practice but sometimes I don't get to fit this in and on those days I make an effort to sit in the sunshine while I eat my lunch or practice a 10 minute guided meditation in the evening. By doing this, I'm a better physio, wife, mama and friend. My life flows with more ease and less resistance, stress and tension. When I come up against any challenges, I'm more grounded to take these on with better clarity, focus and peace.

❤️ We weren't meant to survive in this world, we were meant to thrive! Life is too short and I want to do everything in my power to make it the best I can.
If you feel like you are just surviving or need a little bit more support especially with pain management, I'm here to help. Call/message anytime or book online! ❤️
