It's Speech Pathology Week 2025!

This weeks focus is on the essential role communication plays across all areas of life. Communication is more than just spoken words, it may include written language, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices such as speech-generating tablets, Key Word Sign, Auslan, gestures, facial expressions, body language, eye gaze, tone of voice, as well as pictures and symbols.

Communication is key to how we connect, learn, and engage with the world around us.

Last week I had the privilege of attending the 3-day Speech Pathology Australia Conference in Adelaide, thanks to a generous grant from the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency.

It was a great opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s leading Speech Pathologists and explore the latest innovations in the field. I’m excited to bring these new learnings back to the Riverland and continue supporting our local community with up-to-date and evidence-based practices.

We did it! 100km completed this October to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service ✈️—an organisation that completes up to 700 flights per year just in the Riverland alone! Honey 🍯, Rhett’s trusty golden retriever, was by his side every step of the way. Huge thanks to everyone who supported us.

This October, Rhett is running 100km to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service, an organisation that plays a crucial role in providing healthcare to rural communities like the Riverland. Rhett is passionate about supporting access to vital services in remote areas, and any support would be greatly appreciated to help make a difference for those in need. Honey, his golden retriever, pictured below, will be by his side for the journey.

This Speech Pathology Week, Rhett reflects on how privileged he feels to have found a profession that supports people with their communication challenges. Working with the Riverland community and supporting individuals to express themselves fully is not just a job; it’s about enabling each person to connect in their own unique way. All forms of communication are valid. In Australia, over 1.2 million people access speech pathologists for support.

The Speech Project Riverland has advocated for the inclusion of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) boards in playgrounds across the Riverland region as pictured below. This initiative aims to make our playgrounds more inclusive and accessible for all.

Here's what's happening:
Renmark Paringa Council is pitching this idea to their infrastructure team, for potential to include in the Paringa Town Centre playground redevelopment.

Berri Barmera Council has put forward the concept in their Disability, Access, and Inclusion Plan for future planning.

We're thrilled to see these steps towards creating more inclusive play spaces for everyone.

This one below was designed by Two Way Street, more info here: https://twowaystreet.com.au/playground-boards/
