This World Mental Health Day, we are spotlighting Karla (she/they), a counsellor at Your Community Health who draws on their lived experience to provide safe, affirming support for those seeking mental health care.

"S*x workers are a marginalised group that face unique barriers when it comes to accessing safe and affirming healthcare. Research shows that stigma is the biggest obstacle, with almost 9 in 10 s*x workers in Australia reporting discrimination from healthcare workers in the past year. This stigma often extends into mental health services, where s*x workers describe experiences of judgment, pathologisation, pressure to exit the industry, and even refusal of care. Understandably, many avoid seeking help at all.

As both a counsellor and a person with lived experience in the s*x industry, I am passionate about addressing this gap. My work at Your Community Health focuses on providing s*x worker-affirmative counselling: care that recognises the realities and nuances of s*x work, challenges stigma, and centres the autonomy, dignity, and wellbeing of my clients.

When I first began developing this work as a student, I felt vulnerable disclosing my lived experience in a professional setting. But what I found was a community of colleagues eager to learn, open to being challenged, and committed to building safer services for s*x workers. That support reaffirmed to me that lived experience is valuable and vital in shaping accessible and respectful healthcare. This is why I continue to prioritise the expertise of s*x workers in our own lives, reflective practice, and partnership with peer-led s*x worker organisations.

My goal is to contribute to a culture of counselling that welcomes s*x workers without judgement, celebrates diversity, and ensures our services are safe for all."

World Mental Health Day is a reminder for everyone to take a moment to look after their mental health and support others in their community.

This year’s theme is 'Mental health in humanitarian emergencies'. Crises like natural disasters, conflict, or health emergencies can deeply affect emotional wellbeing. For those experiencing these events, mental health support is just as important as physical safety.

Community support can make a real difference. It helps people cope, recover, and feel stronger when they need it most. If you or someone you know needs mental health support, our team may be able to help you, or connect you with the right services. For more information, please visit our website or call us on 8470 1111.

Racism is being felt across communities, and the rise of hate speech and discrimination is deeply concerning. The Australian Human Rights Commission's report on racism in healthcare is timely and important, and we welcome its insights. We call for its key recommendations to be fully adopted and implemented within the forthcoming National Anti-Racism Framework to strengthen equity in healthcare.

The report confirms many of the issues we have been hearing from community members through our work, including our submission to Yoorrook on health injustice and our In Her Shoes anti-racism co-design project, which amplifies the experiences of local women navigating racism.

Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman stated: “We cannot close the gap in health outcomes without confronting the racism that underpins it.”

The Human Rights Commission report highlights that racism is widespread in healthcare, and contributes to poorer health outcomes through delayed or avoided care, misdiagnosis, and under-treatment. The report makes several key recommendations, including:

Embedding cultural safety standards in healthcare

Providing accessible anti-racism training for health professionals

Expanding interpreter services to ensure equitable access

Supporting Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse-led health initiatives through community-led programs

Recognising historical trauma in health strategies

Embedding anti-racist policies in schools and universities

We support all efforts to systematically improve healthcare, ensuring it is safe, inclusive, and equitable for everyone.

Victoria is making history! Treaty laws have now been introduced to State Parliament. This step was made possible because First Peoples and communities have worked together for a fairer future.

Right now, it is important for all allies and supporters to speak up. Members of Parliament want to know what their communities think as they decide on Treaty.

The best thing you can do is contact your State MP. Call, email, or visit their office and tell them you support Treaty for Victoria. You can also help by sharing this campaign with your friends, family, and community.

You can email your MP in just a few minutes using this link: https://fpav.good.do/victoriansupporttreaty/email-your-mp/

The more people who understand and support this, the stronger our collective voice becomes.

Today we celebrate Bi Visibility Day and show our dedication to recognising and uplifting bis*xual+ identities. First celebrated in 1999 as International Celebrate Bis*xuality Day, the day has grown into a global movement spanning over 30 countries.

Bi Visibility Day is not just about visibility it is about inclusion, respect, and celebration of diverse experiences. The day highlights the contributions, resilience, and pride of bi+ people, and reminds us all to challenge stereotypes and biphobia wherever we see it.
