World Social Work Day
Being a social worker is one of the most rewarding and challenging things I’ve ever done. It’s not just a career—it’s a commitment, a weight I carry in my heart every single day.
The work is hard. Emotionally, psychologically, financially. Some days, I go home completely drained, carrying the stories of children and families who have experienced more pain than anyone ever should. I’ve sat with kids who don’t believe they deserve love, parents who feel like they’re failing, and families who are breaking under the weight of trauma. There are moments when the system feels too big, the resources too limited, and the barriers too high. And I won’t lie—there are times I wonder if I’m making a difference at all.
But then… there are the moments that remind me exactly why I do this.
The child who finally feels safe enough to share their story. The parent who begins to believe they are capable. The moment when a family finds hope again. The small wins, the breakthroughs, the glimmers of change that build into something stronger. These moments keep me going.
Social work is a relentless, exhausting, and sometimes heartbreaking journey. But it’s also a privilege. A privilege to walk alongside children and families, to help them find their own strength, and to witness the incredible resilience of the human spirit.
Today, on World Social Work Day, I honour the work we do—the unseen emotional labour, the sacrifices, the late nights spent worrying about a child’s safety, and the unwavering hope we carry even in the darkest moments. To my fellow social workers: I see you. I stand with you. Keep going. This work matters.
