This week is Chronic Pain Australia’s National Pain Week, raising awareness of the experiences of people living with chronic pain.

A number of chronic dermatologic conditions can be associated with significant pain requiring long-term pain management in addition to treatment of the primary skin disease. If you suffer from a chronic dermatological condition make sure you discuss any pain you may be experiencing with your GP or dermatologist.

Connecting with Patient Support Groups can provide practical and emotional support and resources to help people, their carers and families living with chronic skin conditions that cause pain in many ways.

Dermatologists can identify, diagnose, treat and manage more than 3,000 skin conditions. If you have a concern about your skin, visit your GP who may refer you to a dermatologist.

Today is World Skin Health Day!

This year’s theme — “No Health Without Skin Health” — calls for global awareness, education, and equitable access to care.

In a landmark move, the World Health Assembly recently recognised skin diseases as a global public health priority — a powerful step forward for the 2 billion people worldwide living with skin conditions.

We’re proud to stand with the global dermatology community in advancing a future where everyone can access the skin health care they need.

We congratulate the Australian Government on its support for the resolution and look forward to working together on its implementation for the benefit of patients in Australia and globally.

Today is World Scleroderma Day, raising awareness and support for those affected by scleroderma.

Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease affecting connective tissue. It is characterised by thickening and hardening of the skin. It can also affect the lungs, throat, heart, kidneys and intestines.

We are proud to work with a number of patient support groups, including Scleroderma Australia, an organisation that raises awareness and builds community for people with scleroderma and their families.

In very exciting news, ACD and Melanoma and Skin Cancer Advocacy Network - MSCAN will be developing a national Skin Cancer Scorecard to prioritise efforts on skin cancer action. The Scorecard will be launched at Parliament House, Canberra, in late 2025.

It has been a decade since a parliamentary inquiry made twelve recommendations on what Australian governments, policy makers, advocates and industry should do in the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer in Australia. While some progress has been made, work remains.

The Skin Cancer Scorecard will establish a framework for ongoing monitoring of Australia’s progress in tackling skin cancer. The scorecard will provide clear evidence on the priorities for future action to ultimately reduce the prevalence and burden of skin cancer in Australia.

Today is World Vitiligo Day, a skin condition that occurs when the skin is unable to produce pigment due to the destruction of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), resulting in white patches with well-defined edges. Vitiligo affects approximately 2% of the population.

We are pleased to work with our Patient Support Group Vitiligo Association of Australia who held an event on the weekend featuring ACD Fellow A/Prof Adrian Mar to raise awareness of the condition and the challenges people with vitiligo face.

In the lead up to World Vitiligo Day on 25 June 2025, the Vitiligo Association of Australia is hosting an online and in-person event on 22 June 2025. The event will feature an expert panel and guest speakers, including ACD Fellow A/Prof Adrian Mar.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of our inaugural Green Impact Award is Dr William Hunt for his establishment of the Dermatology Sustainability Network (DSN).

Founded in 2024, the DSN’s vision is to create an international platform to showcase sustainable practices in the dermatology sector. To grow the network from its inception, Dr Hunt assembled an international team to curate high-quality, peer-reviewed content. The DSN has rapidly developed into a free digital repository of articles, research papers, case studies, and best practice guidelines on sustainability in dermatology.

College congratulates Dr Hunt, member of the New Zealand Dermatological Society Inc., and team. We also thank all applicants for your commitment to advancing environmental sustainability in dermatology.
