May is Apraxia Awareness Month!

Apraxia of Speech (Childhood Apraxia of Speech, or CAS) is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard for children to plan and coordinate the movements needed for clear speech.

Every child with apraxia is unique, and with the right support, they can communicate confidently 🌟💬.

Today we pause to remember and honour the bravery, sacrifice, and spirit of the men and women of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

On ANZAC Day, we reflect on the courage shown in service to Australia and New Zealand, and we give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy today.

This week in the clinic, we’ve been creating poppy crafts to commemorate the day and using the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with our clients about remembrance, bravery, and why this day matters. ❤️

Learning Through Craft! 🖍️🐙

Craft is a great way for kids to practice fine motor skills such as cutting and gluing. While also exploring creativity, sequencing, and storytelling.

To make this octopus you’ll need; a toilet paper roll, paper, scissors, glue, a marker, or some googly eyes.
1️⃣ Cover the roll with paper.
2️⃣ Cut the paper into 8 strips at the bottom for legs.
3️⃣ Bend strips outwards.
4️⃣ Decorate with googly eyes, markers, or paint!

Today, Miss Chloe went out into the community, she visited preschools, completed observations, and chatted with educators!

✨ You don’t need fancy toys to support your toddler’s communication. Everyday connection games are powerful for teaching turn‑taking, anticipation, shared joy, and early words. Try weaving these into your day:
👀 Peekaboo: Hide behind your hands, a towel, or the door. Pause… wait for your child’s smile or sound… then pop out with a big “Peekaboo!”
🎵 “Ready… Set… GO” games: Roll a ball, push a car, swing your child, or run across the backyard, and pause before “GO”
👐 Open-close games: Use boxes, bags, or containers. Say “Open?” and wait.
These tiny moments of play are the building blocks of communication.

- Action words: go, down, fall, crash, stop, push
- Describing words: blue, tall, fast, big, loud, red

When playing with a car ramp, you’re doing more than just playing. You’re building language, one turn at a time.
