Why are we as Speech Pathologists so passionate about building rapport with your child?

Building a strong, positive relationship between your child and their therapist is key to successful outcomes. Here's why it matters:

• Trust: A good rapport helps your child feel safe and comfortable, encouraging them to open up and engage fully in therapy
• Motivation: When children enjoy their sessions, they're more likely to participate actively and practice at home.
• Confidence: A supportive relationship boosts your child's self-esteem and willingness to try new challenges.

Building and maintaining rapport is so important to your child’s overall progress and therapy experience 🌟

Home is where the magic happens!🏠

Here at The Speech Co, we love empowering our families with the knowledge and resources to help their child at home. When completing home practice, it’s important to:
• Practice daily: 5-10 minutes is all you need!
• Incorporate your child’s favourite games and toys
• Keep it fun and praise your child!

Remember to ask your Speech Pathologist for fun and easy ways to keep the practice going outside of your sessions.

🌼 A little poem for our Parent and Carer Community 🌼

To the parents and carers showing up each day,
In your own perfectly imperfect way.
We see the love in all you do,
The quiet strength that carries you.

The messy mornings, the late-night talks,
The tiny wins, the wobbly walks.
They all add up, they always do,
To kids who feel safe, loved, and adored by you.

So here’s a gentle little cheer:
You’re doing great, even on the 'tough' days here.
Take a breath, give yourself grace,
There’s magic growing in your place 💛✨

📣 Did you know that children who have difficulty saying certain speech sounds often find reading and spelling harder too?

Speech sound skills are closely tied to phonological awareness - the ability to hear and play with sounds in words - which is a key building block for strong literacy skills.

When a child can’t clearly hear, say, or break apart sounds, it can impact:
🗣 Sounding out words
🔤 Learning letter–sound links
❓ Spelling new words
📖 Reading confidence

The good news? Early intervention makes a huge difference.

Supporting speech sounds early strengthens the foundations for reading and writing, making literacy feel easier and less stressful down the track.

If you’re noticing unclear speech or tricky sounds, trust your gut. Getting support early is one of the best gifts you can give your child 💛 📚

🌈 Want to help your child become more flexible with food? Start with tiny, low-stress changes to other areas of their lives.

Try things like:
🔹 Changing the bag they use for preschool
🔹 Changing the swimmer they usually wear to swimming lessons
🔹 Changing the hat they use at preschool
🔹 Changing the teddy or blanket they sleep with at night

Increasing change in their lives will foster flexibility, and in turn flexibility in their eating. Remember not to change everything at once. The goal isn’t to overhaul their life overnight.

The goal is one small, safe, supported change that your child can tolerate. If they can’t tolerate it, don’t change it.

Start tiny. Stay curious. You’ve got this. 💛

Build Language Through Play! 🧱

Playing with blocks isn’t just fun, it’s a fantastic way to grow your child’s vocabulary and communication skills.

As you create towers or imaginative designs together, try modelling words like:
✅ Shapes, colours, and sizes: “Look at this tiny green block!”
✅ Action words: “Stack it up”, “Balance carefully”, or “Place it here”
✅ Location words: “The red block is under the blue one” or “Put this on top”

Simple conversations during play make learning natural and enjoyable. So grab those blocks and start building language one piece at a time! 💬✨

Stuck for inspiration on how to make speech practice at home fun? Don’t worry, we've got your back!

Here are some playful ideas you can fit into your daily routine to help get that extra bit of speech practice.

1️⃣ Sound Hunt 🔍 Find objects around the house that start with a target sound.
2️⃣ Mirror Talk 🪞 Make silly faces and practise sounds in the mirror.
5️⃣ Tongue Twisters 👅 Keep them short and silly: “Red rocket rocks!”
8️⃣ Echo Game 🗣️ Say a word, and have your child repeat it with a silly voice or gesture.
