THE THREE GUNAS
All phenomena in the universe come under the influence of three primary phases of activity called The Gunas:

Sattwa – creative mode, brings life into manifestation.
Rajas – organising mode, builds and maintains what has been created
Tamas – destructive mode, when the Rajas stage is complete, to bring to an end

THE BALANCE OF THE GUNAS
A person’s reactions to events and situations depends on the balance of Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas in the mind.

The balance of the Gunas in a person’s mind - a predominance of Sattwa is needed, with enough rajas and tamas to bring desires into fruition.
For health and happiness, the mind must maintain this primarily creative influence of SATTWA in order to keep Life moving in a progressive direction

TOO MUCH RAJAS and TAMAS
The type of stimuli influencing the mind can cause distortion of the Gunas. There are three sources of these stimuli:
1. The kind of thoughts and emotions we focus on in the mind
2. The types of things we choose to take in through the senses
3. What we eat and drink See less

According to Ayurveda, eating cooked honey is like eating glue... Please read this article from start to finish and never cook with honey ever again ! Raw honey is a wonderful healing food, rich in nutrients, but as soon as you cook it, it becomes toxic to your system. The latest fad for "sticky chai" which uses honey in its ready-made product should be avoided - whoever invented it did not do their research
"According to the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI), heating honey is contraindicated as it causes adverse effects. Cooking it deteriorates the quality and loses its essential enzymes and nutrients. Heated honey can actually produce delirious effects in the body and can be fatal at the same time"

Read on as we give you a low-down on why you should never cook honey and consume it in raw form only!

WHAT DOES AYURVEDA SAY ABOUT DAY-TIME SLEEPING? Part 1
To sum it up, it's not recommended as it can vitiate Kapha and Pitta... create an imbalance. When you get that after lunch or mid afternoon feeling of drowsiness, it is better to plough through it - shift your energy, take your mind off the need for a nap, and instead do something creative like bake biscuits, or do some gardening, or sing, or dance, or paint, anything creative. Note: there are a few exceptions to the rule about day-time napping.... see further post to find out if you genuinely have a need, or is it just a habit!
So, overcoming the need to nap by doing something creative - this afternoon i got home around 3pm after being out for
5 hours, and too much driving. I felt i needed a nap.... but NO, resist, said the other part of me! So i set about baking biscuits... and now i'm wide awake and the need to nap has disappeared totally. Haven't eaten them yet, so please don't imagine that my energy is due to a sugar hit! But this is not the first time i have made them, so i do know they taste delicious, especially dunked in a cup of chai.
