An interesting article that rings very true for me.

So many of my clients struggle with self worth and self acceptance.

Praising children can train them to become dependent on what others think of them. Their self esteem is measured by how others see them. They modify their behavior to gain love and acceptance. As adults they may then get stuck trying to please everyone and struggle to be authentic. They may even struggle to know what they really want, think or feel.

Ever since my children were very young I’ve done my best to avoid calling them “good”. One very influential parenting book I read was “Your Chlid’s Self Esteem”. The author wrote that when you call a child a “good boy” or “good girl” for something they’ve done they may then believe they’re “bad” when they don’t do that thing. Talking with them instead about how THEY feel about what they’ve done can teach them to connect with their own sense of self.
That’s much more empowering.

But that’s just what I think. What are your thoughts?

Reducing our use of fossil fuels is not just about climate change. It now appears that pollution increases the rates depression and su***de.

I often suggest to my clients that they spend time in nature each day.

Maybe one approach to our escalating rates of the teenage depression and anxiety is to take kids camping in the bush regularly.

If you live in a polluted area I’d also seriously consider a good quality air purifier. And plenty of pot plants in your home.
