Healthy Eating this Summer
http://agedcareconnect.com.au/healthy-eating-in-summer.php

Summer is fast approaching, and with it, plenty of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. As they age, many adults begin to eat foods that are less healthy. Deteriorating taste buds and the loss of our sense of smell can make many older adults reach for processed foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Limited incomes can cause older adults to make judgements about whether to buy less expensive, high calorie foods or their medications. Chronic health conditions may make shopping a hardship. A poor diet can worsen an older adult’s existing health problems, or make them vulnerable to new ones, such as diabetes, and heart disease.

No one is quite sure why humans have a natural need to sleep, though there have been countless studies performed on the subject. Most doctors and scientific research experts agree that sleep is an essential part of restoring our physical and mental health. In reality, the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep stage is the only stage we need to feel refreshed and energized, though everyone goes through alternating patterns throughout the night.

Caring for a loved one who has had a stroke can be very taxing physically, mentally and emotionally. Those fortunate enough to survive the attack have to undergo extensive rehabilitation in order to regain the ability to speak, think clearly, and/or control their basic motor skills depending on where the brain damaged occurred. It’s almost unimaginable how a small blood clot or hemorrhage that interrupts or severs blood flow and oxygen to the brain can radically alter a person’s lifestyle.

How to Deal with Depression in the Elderly
http://agedcareconnect.com.au/how-to-deal-with-depression-in-the-elderly.php
Depression is an illness. Just like the flu, depression can leave a person physically exhausted and unable to cope with everyday life. Don’t belittle your loved one’s depression by telling him to “snap out of it.” Instead, think of the little things that make you feel better when you’re sick. Offering to bring over a warm meal won’t cure him, but it will make him feel cared for.

http://agedcareconnect.com.au/falls-risks-and-hazards-for-the-elderly.php
The risk of falling seems minor. After all, we’ve all fallen at some point in our lives. The aftermath is usually a small scrape and a bruised ego. But elderly fall hazards are a big issue. As we age, the risk of serious injury from falling goes up greatly. It is estimated that one in every three adults age 65 and over falls every year.
