People who get headaches often complain of neck pain too. Addressing muscle imbalances and joint restrictions in the cervical spine (neck) can help to reduce the intensity and severity of headaches for many people. Have you ever considered chiropractic care to address your headaches?

This is one of my favourite quotes because it fits so nicely with the philosophy of chiropractic care. Chiropractic care can help to maintain the mobility of your joints, and the health of your nervous system. Have you seen a chiropractor? Contact us at Everybody Chiropractic.

According to a new report issued by Arthritis Australia today, over 5.3 million Australians are predicted to be living with the pain and disability of arthritis by 2040. This marks a 31% increase from today’s figures largely due to nation's ageing population. Osteoarthritis accounts for a good proportion of this.

What can you do to prevent osteoarthritis?
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise (two hours of moderately intense physical activity each week) ideally tailored exercises that improve flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance)
- Keep your joints mobile and moving well (you may benefit from seeing a chiropractor)

The mobility of the spine at any level is affected by the adjacent areas of the spine. This is one of the main reasons that a chiropractor will scan and check the mobility of the entire spine almost every time you have an appointment. For the neck specifically - the thoracic spine can contribute to more than 30% of neck flexion and 20% neck rotation. Similarly, shoulder muscle function and mobility can also significantly impact neck function. Try this upper back stretch to help not only your thoracic spine mobility but also your neck range of movement.

Reduced pain, improved mobility and a more regulated and better functioning nervous system can mean better sleep quality and quantity. Similarly, our bodies recover and heal more efficiently with better sleep, so it all works as a cycle.

Better sleep = better healing
Reduced pain, better functioning and improved healing = better sleep

This is an awesome low impact exercise for mobilising and strengthening the shoulder muscles and scapular stabilisers. By adding small weights to the hands, or further extending the upper back (raising the head, neck and upper back off the ground slightly) this exercises can be further progressed. Another way to progress the exercise in difficulty is to use higher domes.

Improving strength in the shoulder and scapular muscles can help with posture too.

When you first start this exercise, if you don't have the range of motion to clear the domes, you can use an alternative marker (smaller height to clear). Progressively work towards clearing a greater height as you extend the shoulders and scapulae, to improve your (extension) range of movement and thoracic mobility.

Despite the common assumption that heavy school bags cause lower back pain in children, according to research, the jury is still out on this one. However lower back pain affects up to 4 in 10 Australian students at any point in time; many of whom will experience pain for more than 3 months.

After 3 decades in practice, I can confidently say that a heavy bag, particularly one that is not fitted well (i.e. non ergonomic), one sided bags etc can however play a part in poor postural compensations, muscle tension and discomfort, and even a change in how someone will walk.

Studies have shown that 34%–50% children and adolescents have different degrees of incorrect posture. Importantly, evidence demonstrates that bad posture in adulthood is often formed in childhood.

If your child complains of back pain, or you notice poor postural habits in your child, book an appointment at Everybody Chiropractic for an assessment and posture screen.
