Kirsten Vale Psychology

Kirsten Vale Psychology I am a registered clinical psychologist, a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

I am a clinical psychologist, registered with the national Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. I also hold a PhD in Psychology from the University of Adelaide. My clinical focus is on health-related behaviour in adults and I have particular interest in overweight and associated co-morbidities. Other areas of interest to me include depression and anxiety and I have significant experience working with people with addictions. I use empirically supported approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). As a clinically endorsed psychologist, my clients, with an appropriate referral from a General Practitioner, are entitled to claim rebates from Medicare. My policy is to bulk-bill all clients seen at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and concession-card holders and otherwise charge a small gap fee (currently $30). In addition to my clinical work, I am also currently employed as a clinical lecturer to post-graduate students in the School of Psychology, Flinders University. I would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about the work that I do or how it might benefit you.

Yesterday, I was talking to a client about perspective-taking and how we tend to see things through the lens of our past experiences. What’s helpful is to know that our lens can be changed or altered if that helps us. I sent her these two pictures I took a couple of weeks back. My tripod and camera were in exactly the same spot, but one was taken through a wide-angled lens, the other a telescopic. Same moon. Different lens. Neither is right nor wrong. But it’s ok to like one better than the other and to choose one.

"I don’t know about you, but I’m more concerned about walking away from an argument feeling understood than feeling like I won."

Dr. Gottman found that compromise is essential to manage conflict in relationships. First, you need to talk about your needs.

The APS is pleased to announce that the 2020 Federal Budget includes a doubling of the number of Medicare-funded psychology sessions for all Australians regardless of location, for an initial 2 year period.

This follows years of APS advocacy for recognition of the importance of access to psychological services. More to come.

About 1 million mental health care sessions have been accessed under Medicare in the past month, but psychologists say that figure doesn't convey the full picture of spiking unmet demand amid COVID-19.

This is Oliver. He is about to become my colleague as I transition to stay-at-home ‘tele-health’ communications for all my sessions from this coming Monday. We’ve been experimenting and while nothing beats face-to-face sessions, everyone’s physical health must be protected as much as possible.
I’ll be in touch with everyone who has upcoming appointments to make arrangements individually.
I apologise in advance if Ollie’s promise to be a ‘good boy’ falters here and there.

Trying not to add to the tsunami of information coming through, but wanted you all to know that psychologists have been given dispensation to work with those at risk of having COVID-19 or are susceptible to it (i.e. over 70 years old, parents of a child under 12 months, immune suppressed).
This means that psychologists can provide you with services under Medicare via Skype or FaceTime. Please contact me on 0439 887 368 if you have an appointment and want to arrange an alternative to a face-to-face session.
