What are the main types of skin cancer?

The three most common types of skin cancer are:
1. Melanoma – the most serious form, it can spread to other parts of your body.
2. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) – more common, but less likely to spread.
3. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) – also common and generally not as dangerous as melanoma.

Regular checks can help catch these early, improving treatment outcomes.

How often should you have a skin cancer check?

If you're at high risk—due to factors like fair skin, many moles, or a history of sunburn—schedule a full skin check every 6 months. If you're not at high risk, aim for annual checks. Regular checks can help catch skin cancer early when treatment is most effective.

What to expect during a skin cancer check?

Your doctor will examine your skin and may use a magnifying lens or special light to inspect suspicious areas. If they find something concerning, they might remove a sample of skin tissue for a biopsy to check for cancer. Early detection makes treatment easier, so don’t hesitate to get checked.

How to spot skin cancer early?

Skin cancers often don’t cause symptoms, so it's key to monitor your skin regularly. Look for changes in existing moles or freckles—changes in size, shape, or color. Also, be alert to new spots, crusty sores that won’t heal, or small red lumps. If you notice anything unusual, consult your doctor.

What increases risk of skin cancer?

Risk of skin cancer rises with factors like having fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, many moles, or past sunburns. Spending lots of time outdoors without protection also raises your risk. It’s important to stay aware and protect your skin.
