Cardiac arrests in Australia continue to pose a serious health concern. According to Australian Resuscitation Council statistics, nearly 30,000 Australians suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year with less than 1 in 10 surviving.

Follow the "Chain Of Survival" immediately!

A heart attack and cardiac arrest are two serious heart conditions that can be deadly if not treated promptly. Though they may sound similar, there are key differences between the two:

- A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, usually due to a buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries. This deprives heart muscle cells of oxygen and nutrients, damaging or destroying cells. Early signs of a heart attack include chest pain or discomfort, pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea and lightheadedness.

- Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops pumping blood to the body. This deprives vital organs of oxygen and can lead to damage within minutes. Cardiac arrest often results in sudden collapse and loss of consciousness. There may not be any warning signs prior to cardiac arrest.

Stay tuned for heart attack and cardiac arrest care and treatment post's this week!

If you experience a snakebite in Australia it is critical to follow the pressure immobilisation technique as soon as possible to limit the spread of venom throughout your body.

- Call 000 or 112
- Immediately apply a firm compression bandage over the bite site. Ensure that the bandage is firm enough to restrict blood flow but not tight enough to cut off circulation.
- Apply a second compression bandage from the bottom of the limb (fingers or toes) all the way to the top of the limb (shoulders or groin.)
- Immobilise the bitten limb keeping it still and at or below the level of the heart. Do not wash the bite area, cut it or try to suck the venom out.
- If possible note the time bitten, species of snake if known and symptoms experienced.

Following these steps properly will help buy time until professional treatment can be administered to help save your life.

You could save a loved one's life simply by knowing how to respond if someone is choking.

- Check if the person can speak or cough forcefully. If they are coughing effectively encourage the patient to keep coughing.
- If cough turns innefective, immediately give 5 upward back slaps between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
- If the blockage does not dislodge, provide 5 chest thrusts.
- If not effective call 000 or 112 immediately!
- Alternate between 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the blockage is dislodged or the person becomes unconscious.
- If the person becomes unresponsive, start CPR and attach AED immediately.
