🧠 Men’s Mental Health: It’s Okay to Not Be Okay 💙

Mental health affects us all, but for men, reaching out for support can still be a challenge. 🚶‍♂️ A staggering 1 in 8 men will experience depression in their lifetime, yet many avoid seeking help (Beyond Blue, 2021). In Australia, around 40% of men aged 16-24 reported having a mental health condition, but only 1 in 4 seek professional support (AIHW, 2023).

Why is this? 💭 For many, societal expectations around masculinity discourage expressing vulnerability or seeking help. But the truth is, mental health doesn’t discriminate — and seeking therapy can be life-changing.

💡 Did you know? Men aged 25-34 are least likely to reach out for therapy, with only 15% accessing mental health services (AIHW, 2023). The stigma around mental health is real, but it’s time to break it down.

If you or someone you know is struggling, therapy can be the first step toward a better, healthier future. You are not alone.

Reach out today – because your mental health matters. 🧠💙

⚓️ Dropping Anchor ⚓️
When we experience challenging thoughts or feelings, we can often get caught in an emotional storm that makes it difficult for us to think clearly and can activate our basic survival instincts. This Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) technique was created by Dr. Russ Harris to help combate this. A simple, yet effective tool to centre yourself and connect you with the world around you.

A - Acknowledge: pause and notice what is showing up in your inner world, adjust your self-talk to what you are feelings, use words such as “I am feeling ‘x’”, instead or “I am noticing ‘y’”.

C - Come back: find ways to ground yourself, for example: if you’re sitting, pressing your feet onto the floor, lengthen your spine, stretch your arms, lift and drop your shoulders, use breathwork such as deep breathing.

E - Engage: start to notice what you are doing, look around the room, engage with people around you.

Practice this when not in a distressed state, create a healthy coping habit and use when required.

Hello and welcome to Mental Healthcare Australia’s Instagram page.

By way of introduction my name is Anthony Kutty, the Director and Psychotherapist for Mental Healthcare Australia.

I possess an empathic, intentional and warm therapeutic style, wherein, I place value on creating a strong connection, trust & rapport with you to enable you to share about yourself comfortably. I feel humour, play and authenticity as a therapist can be important facilitators in the counselling process. In session, I provide structure, logic and practicality in my approach as I hope to support you to new areas of growth and self-awareness.

As your therapist, I work from a relational and strengths-based approach. Stemming from various aspects of my career experience in residential care supporting complex youth, Domestic and Family Violence Children’s Counsellor and Group Facilitator for the Stopping Family Violence - Men’s Behaviour Change program and an Alcohol and Other Drugs clinician, I have developed a particular interest in trauma and as such provide a trauma-informed practice.

The primary therapeutic models I draw from are Person-Centred Frameworks, alongside but not limited to Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Existentialism and the Three Phased Approach to the treatment of Trauma.

Within these approaches, I aim to teach psychological strategies to:
- effectively manage painful and uncomfortable emotions;
- disengage from unhelpful beliefs about self and others;
- reaffirm your purpose/direction,
- create motivation through your values,
- and to support you on your journey to happiness and wellbeing.

I look forward to supporting you here at Mental Healthcare Australia.

🌟 Ready to make a change in your life? Research shows that habits make up 40% of our daily behaviors. But building new habits doesn’t have to be complicated! Here’s a simple strategy guide to help you build habits that stick:

1. Start small: Pick a new habit that requires minimal motivation. Rather than trying to read a chapter of a book each day, start by reading a few pages. This will help train your willpower.

2. Increase in small ways: Start small and gradually improve. This by effect will increase your motivation and willpower.

3. Break habits into chunks: To maintain momentum, ensure to keep your habit reasonable. Trying to read more? Start reading a few pages when you wake up and a few more when you are winding down before bed.

4. Get back on track quickly: lts okay to miss a day, plan for failure and bounce back. Identify yourself as someone who doesn’t miss a habit twice.

5. Be patient: Your new habit should feel easy, stay consistent and gradually increase.

Remember, small changes can lead to remarkable results! 💪📚
