Many people think about heart health in terms of diet or exercise.

Yet one of the strongest influences on the heart is the way we live and work every day.

Long hours under pressure. Constant demands. The feeling of needing to stay “on”.

Over time that strain shows up in our energy, our concentration and eventually our physical health.

National Heart Week is a helpful reminder that protecting our health often comes back to everyday choices.
Taking a moment to pause, move, breathe or step outside can help the mind and body reset.

When life gets busy, what helps you slow down and give your mind and body a chance to recover?

When we talk about leadership, it’s easy to focus on titles.

But leadership often begins somewhere much quieter.
That's with how we lead ourselves.

How we manage our attention.
How we respond under pressure.
How we choose where to place our energy each day.

These small choices shape more than we realise.

They influence conversations.
They influence decisions.
They influence the atmosphere around us.

And none of this requires a leadership title.

Every person influences the environment around them.
Self-leadership starts with awareness and small choices throughout the day.

A pause before responding.
A decision to focus on what matters most.
A moment to reset when the pressure rises.

Where do you notice self-leadership making the biggest difference in your day?

When pressure rises at work, attention can narrow in unhelpful ways.

We react faster.
We miss details.
We jump to conclusions.

A simple reset can help.

One tool I often share is PNN:
Pause
Name
Narrow

Pause
Take a moment before responding.

Name
Ask yourself what’s actually happening.
Is this urgency real?
Am I reacting to pressure or incomplete information?

Naming engages the thinking part of our brain.

Narrow
Focus on the one thing that matters most right now.
The next decision.
The key question.
The outcome you want from the conversation.

Sometimes a small pause is enough to change the direction of a meeting or a decision.

Where could a simple pause help you this week?

Many people are seeking to improve their decisions, communication and leadership.

But they often overlook the skill underneath all three.
Attention management.

Where we place our attention shapes what we notice, what we miss and how we respond.
When attention is scattered, it often shows up as:

Reacting instead of thinking
Jumping between issues
Feeling constant urgency
Struggling to prioritise what's most important

It’s easy to think this is a workload problem.
Yet often it’s an attention problem.

The good news is that attention can be trained.

Small practices like protecting tech-free time, focusing on one priority or pausing before responding can shift the quality of our thinking very quickly.

Clarity often follows attention.

I’ve noticed something interesting with a couple of leaders I’m working with.

They haven’t added more to their plate.
They’ve started doing less… more deliberately.

Protecting where their attention goes.

Simple things like:

Switching off from tech in the evenings
Not replying to everything straight away
Focusing on one or two priorities at a time

And things have shifted.

A sense of time expanding
Calmer conversations
Clearer priorities

Work didn’t change.
Their attention did.

Clarity is created, not found.
What’s one small way you could protect your attention this week?

One of the most useful things we can learn at work is to notice when our attention has slipped.

Not hours later.
In the moment.

It often looks like this:

Reading the same email twice and still missing the key point.
Replying faster than the situation really requires.
Feeling a sudden sense of urgency.
Moving on to the next task without finishing the last one.

Many of us assume this means we need to push harder.
Often the opposite is true.

It’s a signal to reset.

A short pause.
A breath.
A moment to decide what actually matters next.

Small resets can change the quality of our decisions more than we realise.

When do you notice your attention slipping most during the day?

Something special is returning to the farm this year.

The Grounded Woman Retreat will be held on

🍃Sunday 5 July🍃

A day to slow down, reconnect and remember what balance feels like - surrounded by nature, good conversation and deeply restorative experiences.

I’m already quietly preparing something beautiful for the women who join us.
More details will come in time.

For now, simply save the date.

You won’t always notice when your attention is compromised.

It doesn’t announce itself.

It looks like this:

🍃Responding quickly instead of thoughtfully
🍃Half listening in conversations
🍃Jumping between tasks and missing key details
🍃Barking at someone, when you normally wouldn’t
🍃Avoiding a conversation because it feels like “too much”

On their own, these moments seem small.

But over time, they shape how we communicate, how we decide and how we lead.

And that’s where the real cost sits.
So I’m curious…

Where do you notice this showing up most in your day?

I’m really looking forward to being part of the Regional Safety Expo Australia in Rockhampton.

It’s great to see an event bringing together leaders across mining, energy and local industry to have real conversations about safety.

I’ll be sharing some practical insights around how pressure and communication impact decision-making and what that means for safety on the ground.

If you’re heading along, come and say hello.
