‘NOWHERE TO GO’: The death of a newborn baby delivered inside a tent along the Murrumbidgee River in Wagga has shone a confronting spotlight on the city’s worsening homelessness crisis.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with new details revealing the infant was one of twins born prematurely inside the tent. The second baby remains in a critical condition and is receiving care at Wagga Base Hospital, along with its mother.

The case has triggered an outpouring of grief, anger and disbelief across the Riverina, with residents questioning whether enough was done to support the mother before Saturday’s emergency.

How could a heavily pregnant woman be living rough along the river, just 300 metres from a police station, and still fall through the cracks?

Who knew? Who didn’t? What support, if any, was in place? Were warning signs missed?

Sadly, this is not an isolated concern. It is a reflection of something much larger unfolding along the river, where more people, including women and children, are living in tents, cars and makeshift shelters with nowhere else to go.

The issue has plagued Wagga for years, yet the central question remains unresolved: where are vulnerable people supposed to go when informal camps are cleared, and who takes responsibility when they fall through the cracks?
