👁 What is Glaucoma? 👁

Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases where vision is lost due to damage to the optic nerve. It causes irreversible vision loss. The loss of sight is usually gradual and a considerable amount of peripheral (side) vision may be lost before there is an awareness of any problem, thus being know as " sneak thief of sight". Unfortunately there is no cure for glaucoma, and vision loss is irreversible.

Did you know:

• 1 in 50 Australians will develop glaucoma in their lifetime.

• 50% of people with glaucoma are unaware that they have it.

• You're 10x more likely to have glaucoma if a direct relative has it.

It is important to remember that glaucoma cannot be self-detected. Only an optometrist or an ophthalmologist can determine whether you have glaucoma or not. Regular eye exams are recommended to help aid in the prevention of glaucoma.
