Some big news out of the Federal Court...

A new Fed Court decision has confirmed that people with early access to Aged Care might still be eligible for the NDIS.

Why does this matter?

The NDIA has been rejecting applications to the Scheme by using a narrower interpretation of the eligibility requirements.

To access the NDIS, a person must establish that they are likely to require an NDIS support for their lifetime. The NDIA interpreted this to mean that a person would not be eligible for the NDIS if the support they need could be provided by another system (such as Aged Care).

This is particularly relevant for people who are eligible to access Aged Care before they turn 65, like First Nations people (who may be eligible from 50 yrs old) and people experiencing/at risk of homelessness.

The Fed Court found the NDIAโ€™s approach was incorrect. This could have wider implications for people who access other services, like injury compensation schemes.

Weโ€™ve all been hearing about I-CAN *a lot* lately. But the government seems much less eager to talk about the next step: the development of a budget.

Which is kind of wild when you think about it, โ€˜cause budget development is the whole point of the needs assessment. Nobody is doing I-CAN for the fun of it.

Sara Gingold could not live with the mystery, so in her latest article she sorted through all the diverse sources of information to get a sense of what we know, what we donโ€™t know and everything in between.

Anyone else? ๐Ÿ˜…

Being overstimulated is unpleasant, to say the least. It's when your brain gets too much input at once. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿฅบ

Feeling easily annoyed, irritated or emotionally drained, having trouble focussing or struggling to make decisions could be signs you're overstimulated.

The feeling of overstimulation can differ from one person to the next, and it might not feel the same for you as it does for the next person. Signs of overstimulation in adults are different to those in kids.

If you feel overstimulated, certain short-term techniques may help you calm down in the moment:
๐Ÿ’™ Find a quiet space: consider stepping away for a few minutes or taking breaks to prevent feeling overstimulated.
๐Ÿ’™ Use deep breathing exercises: slow, deep breaths can help your body and mind relax.
๐Ÿ’™ Limit sensory input: try using noise-cancelling headphones or dimming the lights.
๐Ÿ’™ Remind yourself that you are safe: try to remind yourself that youโ€™re not in any danger and that youโ€™ll be able to exit the stimulating environment soon.
๐Ÿ’™ Use grounding techniques: these exercises may help reduce anxiety. Try to focus on a physical sensation, like holding a cold drink, tasting something sour, or pressing your feet into the floor.

Longer-term strategies like sticking to a routine, eating enough, resting, anticipating your triggers and avoiding certain situations can also help you if you frequently experience signs of overstimulation. ๐Ÿค—

If overstimulation is making daily life difficult, talking with a healthcare professional could help. A therapist can help you to process your experiences and learn personalised coping techniques. ๐Ÿ‘
