Wow what a week! This week marks another major change in how NDIS plans are structured, with new funding rules coming into effect from 19 May 2025. This is the next biggest change since the 3rd of October legislation changes to NDIS supports.
From 19 May 2025, all new and reassessed NDIS plans will follow the new funding period system.
It’s another big shift from the NDIA, but at Oak Tree Alliance, we’re here to help. We’ll guide you through what these changes mean for you and your supports, and we’re always available to answer your questions.
So what are some key takeaways from this 19 May change:
📢 Starting Monday, 19 May 2025, if you get a new or updated NDIS plan, your funding will now be released in smaller chunks over time instead of all at once.
🗓️ What are funding periods?
This will vary from each participants, but funds may be released, every 3 months, 6 monthly or 12 monthly depending on your plan.
You don’t lose any unused money – it carries over to the next funding period within your current plan.
For Home & Living supports, funds will usually be released monthly.
Some items like assistive technology or home modifications may still be released in full.
📅 When does it start?
Your funding periods start on your plan’s start date.
💰 What happens to leftover funds?
If you don’t use all your funding in a period, the unused funds roll into the next period of the same plan.
Leftover funds at the end of your plan do not carry over to a new plan.
📤 How do claims work?
Updated information from the NDIA is that if there is an invoice that crosses over two funding periods, this should be okay.
❌ What if I go over my available budget?
If you try to claim more than what’s in your current period (including rolled-over funds), the whole claim will be rejected.
You can’t use funds from a future funding period.
🔁 Can I move funds between periods?
No, you can’t move money between periods yourself.
You can ask the NDIA to change how your funding is released (a plan variation).
If you need more total funds, you’ll need a plan reassessment.
🔓 Is my plan still flexible?
Core supports are still flexible (depending on how they are managed).
Capacity Building supports are also flexible, unless your plan says otherwise.
