๐Ÿ’™ February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™

Ovarian cancer is often called the โ€œsilentโ€ cancer because symptoms can be vague and easy to overlook. Knowing the signs and listening to your body can make a difference.

Common symptoms may include:
โœ”๏ธ Ongoing bloating
โœ”๏ธ Pelvic or abdominal pain
โœ”๏ธ Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite
โœ”๏ธ Urinary urgency or frequency
โœ”๏ธ Unexplained fatigue or changes in bowel habits

If symptoms are new, persistent, or worsening, donโ€™t ignore them.

Early detection can improve outcomes. If you have concerns, a family history of ovarian cancer, or notice changes that donโ€™t feel right, book an appointment with your GP to discuss further.

๐Ÿ’™ Awareness saves lives โ€” share this post to help spread the word.

๐ŸŽ—Reminder
โ˜€๏ธ Slip, Slop, Slap โ€“ and Reapply! โ˜€๏ธ

With our Queensland sun, itโ€™s important to apply sunscreen every day โ€” not just at the beach.

โœ”๏ธ Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outdoors
โœ”๏ธ Reapply every 2 hours (or more often if swimming or sweating)
โœ”๏ธ Use SPF 30+ or higher
โœ”๏ธ Donโ€™t forget ears, neck, lips, hands and feet

๐Ÿ’„ There are also plenty of moisturisers and makeup products with sunscreen built in, so you can protect your skin while keeping up with your routine.

Keep yourself and your family sun-safe this summer and all year round. Protecting your skin today can help reduce the risk of skin cancer in the future.

If you have concerns about your skin or notice any changes, speak with your GP or book a skin check.

๐ŸŽ’ Back-to-School Health Tips for Parents ๐ŸŽ’

Getting kids ready for school goes beyond supplies and uniforms โ€” itโ€™s about physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Here are some tips to start the school year healthy and happy:
Physical Health & Wellness:
โœ”๏ธ Routines: Gradually shift bedtime and wake-up times for 9โ€“12 hours of sleep.
โœ”๏ธ Nutrition: Balanced breakfasts, healthy lunches with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and plenty of water. Limit sugary drinks.
โœ”๏ธ Activity: Encourage 60 minutes of daily physical activity and outdoor play.
โœ”๏ธ Hygiene: Teach handwashing, covering coughs, and SunSmart practices (hats & sunscreen).
โœ”๏ธ Check-ups: Schedule annual physicals, vision, and dental checks, and ensure immunizations are up to date.
Mental & Emotional Health:
โœ”๏ธ Anxiety: Talk openly about fears, validate feelings, and practice coping skills like deep breathing.
โœ”๏ธ Social Skills: Discuss bullying, teach confident โ€œstopโ€ and walk-away strategies, and encourage positive peer connections.
โœ”๏ธ Screen Time: Limit electronics an hour before bed to improve sleep.
โœ”๏ธ Family Time: Prioritize phone-free meals and one-on-one time to connect.

Taking a few simple steps now can help your child start the school year confident, healthy, and ready to learn.

๐Ÿฉบ If you have concerns about your childโ€™s health, development, or wellbeing, book an appointment with your GP at Alma Street Medical
