The easiest high protein breakfast ever. I’ve hurt my leg so decided to start doing some upper body weights instead of running, and you need to have a good hit of protein after weights to optimise your workout. So …. take high protein Greek style yogurt, protein powder on top - done! And let me tell you this combo is DELICIOUS. No paid sponsorships here, just love these two together … tastes like dessert! One cup of this yogurt + just 1/2 scoop powder = big 33 G protein (we cannot metabolise more than 30 g at a time generally). For anyone interested in weight loss a protein rich brekky is essential for reducing the desire to snack later in the day and steadying blood sugar levels so reducing sweet cravings.

Let me introduce you to your next easy dinner … Lilydale and Cole’s pre-marinated boneless chicken. Yes that’s right, throw in the oven for around 50 minutes till golden and so tender you can cut into pieces with blunt scissors so everyone gets their favourite bit. Add microwave rice, or Birdseye Couscous with Veggies, open and tip bag of Cole’s salad and hey presto dinner is served.

Weekend meal prep get-it-done-and-get-outside … chop chicken (about 1 kg, extra for the kids lunches or a second dinner) cook in oil with 1/3 pack of this curry mix (from Harris farm), add sauce, add 1/3 container evaporated milk (lighter than cream but gives that lovely velvety taste and makes the sauce go further) … done. The Sharwoods is one of the lighter butter sauces and is currently half price at Coles. Serve with veggies and rice.

Protein bars, homemade with 5 ingredients - nut butter (I used chickpea butter to make it nut free for school), oats (zapped them in the blender for a smoother texture), protein powder, maple syrup and milk. Oh and chocolate drizzled on top. No bake, more budget friendly and without the looooooong list of unfamiliar ingredients of most protein bars and they taste great. Search chewoutloud protein bars.

Ultra Processed Foods comprise up to 50% of our diets …. and new research shows they are unhealthier than you think. Including UPFs regularly in your diet increases your risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease and cancer. People born after 1990 are more likely to develop cancer before they are 50 than people born before 1970 and this has been attributed to the rise of UFPs in our diet. Ultra processing essentially destroys the normal cellular structure of whole foods - plants, animals and grains - and adds sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, which leads our body to process it abnormally resulting in inflammation, the root of almost all illness. Interestingly an increasing number of people following plant based diets are eating plant based UFPs falsely believing they are healthy. Basically if your grandmother wouldn’t recognise it, it comes in a package, has a long list of ingredients many of which you don’t recognise, is fiercely marketed and contains a heap of sugar, salt and fat and a lack of fibre, it’s ultra processed. It’s not realistic to avoid them altogether, but as much as possible make UFPs “sometimes” food.

Ever thought about how your eating affects your eyes? As we age conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration start to become a little more real, and having just gotten 👓 it’s smart to look after our eyesight. The best foods to protect and nourish our eyes; eggs, green leafy veggies such as kale, spinach and peas, pumpkin, Brussells, broccoli, beans and corn are good for our macula, Omega 3 oils found in fatty fish and seafood support general eye health, nuts and seeds, and low GI carbs (veggies, fruits, whole grain cereals and breads, oats, Basmati rice, quinoa, legumes and legume pasta) are best. Exercise and a healthy weight are also beneficial. Those with a family history of macula disease may benefit from specific supplementation - ask your doctor.

Healthy ✅ Delicious ✅ Dead simple to make ✅ From the Healthy Food Guide Nutty Oat and Chocolate slice…. I replaced the peanut butter and peanuts with tahini (good source of calcium, fibre, protein and good fats) and pumpkin seeds (iron, fibre, protein and good fats) for a lunchbox friendly slice that was partly eaten before I drizzled the chocolate on top … always a good sign ☺️ Mix 1.5 cups rolled oats, 1 cup tahini, 1/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1/4 cup chocolate chips, bake in a 180 degree oven for 20 mins or until firm.

Back in favour … a declaration signed by over 1000 scientists from the worlds leading universities has stated that “removing fresh meat and dairy from diets would harm human health” particularly of children, women, the elderly and low income individuals. Critically lean red meat rather than processed meat, when eaten in moderate quantities (not more than 90 g a day) and in conjunction with a healthy diet has been shown to be beneficial by providing essential vitamins, minerals and protein … and is difficult to replace. Once again, balance is key.
