As I see more complex relationships situations and dynamics in my work as a couples therapist - and an ever increasing dissatisfaction with traditional forms of relationship - I’m embarking on a new course of discovery and enquiry around the difference between commitment and monogamy.

Some of the couples I see have been in open relationships for many years and some are considering it as a possibility rather than divorce or separation.

The question of whether it is desirable or likely to succeed over the long term is something I am keen to discover as I research the field and explore the challenges with my couples.

Feeling safe and secure in a relationship is really important for a happy and healthy partnership. When you feel safe with your partner, you can trust that they will support and protect you emotionally, physically, and mentally.

Here are some examples of what it might mean to feel safe in a relationship:

✅️Emotionally safe: Feeling free to express your feelings, thoughts, and needs without being judged, criticised, or rejected.
✅️Physically safe: Feeling protected from harm or danger, such as knowing that your partner won't intentionally hurt you physically or emotionally.

✅️Mentally safe: Feeling confident that your partner will respect your boundaries and privacy, and won't manipulate you in any way.

✅️Financially safe: Feeling secure and supported by your partner in terms of financial stability and security.

✅️Sexually safe: Feeling respected and comfortable in your sexual interactions with your partner, and having the ability to say no to any sexual activity you're not comfortable with.

When you feel safe and supported in your relationship, it can strengthen your emotional connection and help you feel more satisfied and fulfilled.

For those who are single and longing for a romantic relationship, it's easy to fall into the trap of feeling lonely and desperate.

Remember:

It's important to recognise that happiness and fulfillment SHOULD come from within. Instead of focusing solely on finding a partner, invest in personal growth and pursue your passions.

This can create a sense of purpose and fulfillment, making you more attractive to potential partners who share similar values and interests.

Building meaningful connections with others, without attachment to specific outcomes, can also bring joy and companionship.

Trust that the right person will come into your life when the time is right, and in the meantime, focus on building a happy and fulfilling life for yourself.

Healing your inner child is a process of understanding and addressing unresolved emotional experiences that you may have had during your childhood. These experiences can shape the way you perceive yourself, others, and the world around you, and can have a significant impact on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors as an adult.

When you heal your inner child, you are working to identify and address any emotional wounds that may be causing you pain or difficulty in your adult life.

Okay, I guess I better start so I’d like to go back to my 18-year-old self and tell him that he shouldn’t worry about the future and in particular he shouldn’t worry about whether he’s gonna get a girlfriend or not, and he should also not worry about which direction he should go in academics or worry about which way his career is going to go because everything is unfolding perfectly, and that you will learn what you need to learn and your discover what you need to discover and sometimes you need to go into the forest and get lost in order to find yourself and come out. Stronger. Have faith in yourself and have fun because life is just too short to worry so much about the future.

I often give couples and even individuals, the questionnaire, where they have to rank these top 10 needs into the top five minutes.

However, I believe that there is a really important need that people have which is not just a need in a relationship, but it is an important need within the context of being in a relationship that is not in this list. What do you think it is

thrive when both parties work their best to find common ground and compromise. These are key elements to ensure a successful partnership. It is important to recognise that compromise is not a one-way street, and it should not be an expectation for one person to consistently give in while the other takes.

The art of compromise involves both partners coming together to find a solution that works for both of them.

How do partners successfully compromise? Effective communication is a great start. In fact, it is the foundation for any successful compromise. This means listening actively to each other’s needs and concerns, expressing oneself clearly and respectfully, and being open to different perspectives. It may take some effort and patience, but by working together to find middle ground, couples can strengthen their relationship and build trust and respect.

Ultimately, finding a compromise can lead to a win-win situation, where both partners are satisfied with the outcome and feel heard and valued in the relationship.

Infidelity can be a painful and challenging experience in any relationship. I have seen the devastating effects of infidelity on individuals and couples alike. Whether you have experienced infidelity in your own relationship or have a friend who is going through it, it's essential to know that healing is possible.

Rebuilding trust and repairing a relationship after infidelity takes time, commitment, and effort from both partners. It's essential to acknowledge the pain caused by the infidelity and work towards understanding why it happened in the first place. By addressing the underlying issues that led to the infidelity, couples can begin to heal and rebuild their relationship on a foundation of trust and open communication.

As a psychologist, I encourage couples to seek professional help when dealing with infidelity. A trained therapist can provide a safe space for couples to process their feelings, work through their issues, and learn healthy communication and relationship skills.

If you or someone you know is struggling with infidelity, know that you are not alone, and there is hope for healing and recovery. With commitment, effort, and the right support, couples can overcome infidelity and build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship.

I have uploaded a video on YouTube highlighting some helpful steps on how to recover from an affair. Check David Fox - Psychologist and Couples Coach on YouTube or check my bio for the link.
