HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE OVULATING?

I ask my my patients this question all the time! We are often told that ovulation occurs on day 14 of the menstrual cycle. However, this is rarely the case. So I thought I’d share a few tips about ovulation and some key signs to look out for so that you can better understand your own cycle.

In the lead up to ovulation, oestrogen is abundant. This triggers a surge in LH which stimulates the follicle to release an egg and secrete progesterone. In Chinese medicine, we describe this process as the transformation from Yin to Yang in the menstrual cycle.

The eb and flow of hormones in the lead up and during ovulation can be reflected as physical changes in the body. These signs can be useful tools if you are trying to conceive, seeking a natural method of contraception or if you’re wanting to deepen your understanding of your menstrual cycle.

Here is what to look out for!
1. Changes to cervical fluid - Clear, stretchy, va**nal discharge is secreted in the days leading up to ovulation. You might feel more “wet” or notice a slippery sensation when wiping.

2. A rise in your BBT - An increase in basal body temperature of 0.3 degrees for at least 3 consecutive days indicates ovulation has occurred. The day of ovulation is the temperature before the rise.

3. Changes to the shape, position and texture of the cervix - the cervix is softer on palpation and sits higher in the va**na. This is due to the tightening of the ligaments around the uterus in response to the peak in oestrogen

4. Increased libido - the surge in oestrogen may increase libido in the lead up to ovulation

5. Abdominal discomfort - some people feel one sided low abdominal twinging or cramping as the egg is released during ovulation.

6. Other signs - the fluctuation of hormones around ovulation may give rise to sensitive ni***es, tender breasts, bloating, mood changes, headaches.

If you’re seeking support with your menstrual cycle or planning on starting a family, I am here to help you.

Did you know that cosmetic acupuncture helps to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen in our skin?

These are the main fibres that form the structure of our skin. As we age, the production of both elastin and collagen starts to decline which can lead to loss of tone, sagging and wrinkling of our skin. This is one of the many ways in which facial acupuncture can help with aging.

Here are some others
👉🏽 increases blood circulation
👉🏽 carries nutrients to cells
👉🏽 relaxes the facial muscles
👉🏽 stimulates lymph system to clear toxins
👉🏽 reduces puffiness
👉🏽 enhances muscle tone
👉🏽 clears inflammation & even out skin tone

Of course, a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle is also important in maintaining healthy skin.

After completing my training with Michelle Gellis earlier in the year, I’m excited to share my knowledge with you all. Come and book in for a facial acupuncture consultation and we can formulate a treatment plan that is tailored to you.

Sleep is one of the four primary pillars to maintaining our health and vitality. Others include movement/ exercise, healthy diet and the ability to regulate our thoughts and emotions.

When we sleep, our body and mind are nourished and our yin is restored enabling function with more energy, vitality and clarity. Yet so many people are suffering from sleep deprivation and lack quality, restorative sleep which over a long period of time can lead to a cascade of physical, emotional and mental consequences.

So here are a few simple tips on how to improve your quality of sleep!

1. Put the electronic devices away! Despite this being the modern day approach to winding down and relaxing, it is hyper stimulating for the mind and body and is not conducive to quality sleep.

2. Allow several hours between eating dinner and going to sleep. Going to bed with a full belly can injure the digestive system and fragment our sleep.

3. Soaking the feet in hot water helps to draw the energy down away from head, settle a hyperactive mind and promote relaxation before sleep.

4. Regular exercise places extra demand on the body and helps the body and mind to fatigue.

5. Nose breathing whilst sleeping can help to reduce snoring and sleep apnoea and reduce interruptions whilst sleeping.

6. Best to air out the bedroom during the day then close windows at night, especially if it’s cold! When we sleep, our energy moves inward away from the exterior of the body which leaves the exterior of our body vulnerable to the cold and wind.

7. Foetal position is recommended for a sound sleep.

8. Book in for an acupuncture treatment! Acupuncture can help to settle the nervous system, promote a calm state of mind and improve quality of sleep.

NOURISHING THE MOTHER //
Did you know acupuncture can be helpful to prepare a Mumma’s body for labour? Acupuncture can help to stimulate blood flow to the uterus, enhance uterine contractions, encourage baby to move into a good position for labour, relax the muscles and sinews throughout the pelvis and settle the nervous system.

Here I have captured my beautiful friend at 39 wks blissing out with bubbi post acupuncture treatment. Of course I forgot to take a photo whilst the cups and needles were in 🤷‍♀️ Sending you all of my strength, love and support bella for this next part of your journey to motherhood. I cannot wait to meet your creation.

Are you feeling a shift in your energy on these cold and rainy days? You’re not the only one!

Autumn is the time of year where energy in our natural environment starts to contracts and turns inward. Qi draws away from the branches of a tree, the leaves fall and its life force is contained in the trunk whilst it waits for the spring sun to flourish again. We naturally tend to follow the same rhythm.

In Chinese medicine we speak about the importance of nourishing your Yin during Winter. This means surrendering to the natural urge to slow down and giving yourself permission to deeply rest and recharge. Your might intuitively feel like finding a slower exercise routine or movement practice. Or allow yourself an extra hour of sleep in the morning. Listen to the wisdom of your body and surrender to this calling.

I have decided to honour this transition by committing to:
🍂waking up with the sun, no earlier!
🍂more Yin yoga
🍂3 x 20 min meditation per week
🍂Weekly candle lit magnesium salt bath
🍂5 rhythms dance on Friday nights
🍂 Learn a new activity that encourages me to be slow and still ie knitting.

What will your commitments be?

If you are try to find someone who has complete care and commitment to your health journey, I highly recommend Giulia for this. I found her at the end of 2021 in a time when I couldn’t get my skin breakouts, eczema or women’s health under control. She worked intensely with me giving me alternative treatments and herbs advising me to trust the process and I am so grateful I did. My skin has completely cleared and my menstrual cycle is free now of all the harsh cramps, long heavy bleeds, head aches and extreme fatigue. I feel like a different woman, and completely healed from the inside out.

Thank you Giulia, I appreciate everything you did for me.

DANDELION & CHRYSANTHEMUM //

Known in Pinyin as Pu Gong Ying & Ye Ju Hua, these two herbs are a sublime duo that work together to support the health of the eyes. Eye conditions that result in pain, redness and swelling of the eyes such as styes/ chalazions can be soothed with these two herbs.

I woke up with my first ever Stye last Saturday (the morning of my good friends’ wedding, of course🤦🏽‍♀️). I simmered and strained the herbs and sipped on the tea all morning. I also used the tea topically and made a warm herbal compress for my eye. My eye was back to normal in two days. Another way of using the herbal tea is to do a facial steam. Using a towel over the head to build the vapour and repeatedly blinking the eyes.

Spring (Summer doesn’t seem to have arrived just yet) is a particular time of year where the eyes can easily become agitated. If this relates to you, give this herbal remedy a try and let me know how you go!

ACU FOR HAY FEVER //
It’s been a really rough hay fever season down here on the Mornington Peninsula. The wild winds and fluctuating weather has stirred up every allergen under the sun. In clinic, I’m seeing lots of red swollen eyes, congested sinuses, itchy eyes and throat, sneezing, wheezing, headaches, you name it. These facial points are my go-to’s toe help relieve acute flare ups with congestion and itchy red eyes.

BL2
YINTANG
BITONG TO LI20 (thread down)

I also bleed the apex of the ear to help relieve sensation of heat in the face and throat.

Other points i often use in an acute flare up are
LI4
LI11

Stay tuned for new hay fever herbal tincture for further symptomatic relief. If you have any questions or curious about how acupuncture and herbal medicine can help you, please reach out.

10/10/2022

It’s always a surprising conversation when I explain to patients the importance of eating a warm breakfast in the mornings to support their digestion. I often refer to traditional Chinese analogy that describes the Stomach as a cooking pot. The breakdown and absorption of food inside the Stomach is dependent on the strength of the digestive fire underneath the pot. When we fill the Stomach with warm food, cooked foods it allows this fire to burn brighter which leads to efficient digestion.

I regularly witness puzzled expressions as they reflect on their morning ritual of smoothies, muesli, juices, fruit salads, yogurt and açai bowls. I was also scratching my head when my Chinese Medicine practitioner first had this conversation with me.

A question I commonly receive after this discussion is “Well what should I eat for breakfast?” Rice congee is a favourite and is commonly eaten for breakfast is many Asian cultures. It feels good in my belly, warms my centre and keeps me going until lunch. Try it for yourself and tune into how it feels in your body. See recipe below.

SHIITAKE CONGEE //

🍲bring to boil 1/2 cup of rice in 10 cups of water / chicken broth / fish broth

🍲add 4-6 shiitake mushrooms (either dried or fresh) and 3 slices of ginger

🍲reduce to slow simmer with lid on and slightly ajar. Cooking time can be anywhere from 30min-90min depending on how you like your congee. The longer you cook it the more liquid will absorb and the rice will change to a porridge consistency

🍲steam some green leafy veggies such as Chinese broccoli, bok choy, kale, silverbeet etc.

🍲boil an egg (6 mins for a half boiled egg)

🍲once congee is ready, serve up in a bowl with greens and egg

🍲add a sprinkle of sesame seeds and drizzle a little sesame oil and tamari
