Social media can have many relationship benefits. It can allow you to remain connected to family and friends on the other side of the world, interact with those who have shared interests, and maintain a sense of connectedness in long distant romantic relationships.

However, poorly defined boundaries about the way you, and your partner, use social media may result in the use of social media triggering insecurities about your relationship.

The good news is, there are ways to navigate the use of social media as a couple to reduce the discomfort and insecurities it may cause.

How many times have you gone to a medical appointment and expressed your concerns, only to be handed a quick diagnosis and cookie cutter treatment plan? If it’s anything like my experience, your answer will likely be something along the lines of “too many times”. Too often we are rushed in and rushed out of the appointment, feeling like we weren’t heard or acknowledged at all.

What you think is happening is important!

Is Google solution finding or problem creating?

With today’s modern technology, we have access to a near unlimited amount of information using the internet. This is amazing if you’re looking for the nearest restaurant. But it can be quite harmful when you start googling symptoms in an attempt to find answers relating to your presenting concerns.

One of the biggest problems with googling your symptoms stems from the amount of raw information the internet will provide you, without any filters to discern what information best fits your symptoms.

That’s why, whenever you look up your pain symptoms, the internet will often suggest that cancer is a possibility.

That’s where we come in!

Your local health professionals have the skills needed to filter through this raw data and figure out the best diagnostic fit for your current presenting concern.

Although some rare and random condition MIGHT fit your symptoms, something that is present in about 1 in 4.5 million people is more than likely NOT what you have.

“This year I’m going to lose weight and/or I’m going to do more exercise”.

We often start the new year with strong motivation to change certain aspects of our lives. We make our resolutions, announce them to those around us, and spend the next few days strongly committing to these goals. However, as with many new year resolutions, these goals are all but forgotten by the end of the month.

When clients are discussing this inability to keep up with their resolutions with me, one of the most common reasons preventing them from achieving their goals is because of an injury they are experiencing; often an old injury that has reoccurred.

So why do our old injuries keep coming back to haunt us? Why can’t we seem to shake this niggling low back pain that rears its head every time we try to increase our activity? The answer is surprisingly simple…

The idea of starting therapy can seem daunting. There may be numerous questions racing through your mind; “What are they going to ask me?”, “Do I need to prepare anything before hand?”, “What happens after the appointment?”

It is completely normal to feel nervous in the lead up to your first appointment! To help you address some of this stress or fear, here is a summary of what to expect during your first consultation:
https://www.healthhubnsw.com.au/blogs/what-to-expect-at-your-first-psychology-appointment

It is important to remember, every psychologist’s consultation process will vary slightly as psychologists not only have different styles of treatment approaches, but we also have different personalities! It is important you find a psychologist who you feel comfortable with, and who you feel you can open up to. Your first appointment is often a great opportunity to see if the psychologist you have made the appointment with is the right person for you.

Pain is a complicated topic. It’s not as clear cut as “this is sore and now its better”. External factors often influence the amount of pain, and type of pain we experience. These factors can include, but are not limited to:

- Work Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Poor Nutrition
- Hormone changes
- Anxiety

Each of these factors can sensitise our body and exacerbate our perceived pain levels. We would love to hear what external factors you find impact on your level of pain in the comments below!

For more information check out our recent blog, "Why is my Pain Getting Worse?" for information on why your pain can feel worse on some days and better on others.

Sciatica is a term that gets a little overused in today’s society to describe pain in the back and the leg. It has been thought, since the term was coined, that the pain is purely caused by compression of a nerve in the back. Years of research and treating this condition has changed our understanding of this pain. Instead of “sciatica” having one sole cause, we now understand that there are two key elements; “the kindling” and “the spark”.
