Are we raising resilient kids… or just comfortable ones?

It’s a tough question — but an important one.

Because every parent wants their child to be happy.
Safe. Confident. Supported.

But here’s the tension no one really talks about:

Resilience isn’t built in comfort. It’s built in challenge.

Not overwhelming, unsafe stress —
but the everyday moments where kids feel:

Frustrated
Disappointed
Nervous
Unsure of themselves

And instead of stepping in straight away… we pause.

Here’s the challenge 👇

👉 Do you rush to fix — or allow space for them to figure it out?
👉 Do you remove discomfort — or help them move through it?
👉 Do you rescue — or coach?

Because every time we step in too quickly, we send a subtle message:

“You can’t handle this without me.”

But when we stay calm, stay present, and guide instead of rescue, we teach something far more powerful:

“You can do hard things — and I’m right here while you learn.”

Resilient kids aren’t fearless.
They’re kids who have learned:

✔ I can feel big emotions and still be okay
✔ I can try, fail, and try again
✔ I can solve problems
✔ I can cope when things don’t go my way

That’s what prepares them for life — not perfection, not constant happiness.

So next time your child struggles…
pause before you step in.

It might feel uncomfortable in the moment.
But that’s often where the real growth is happening.

What is your “Shadow Self”?

The idea of the shadow self comes from the work of Carl Jung — and it’s not as dark or dramatic as it sounds.

In simple terms, your shadow is the part of you that you’ve learned to hide.

It’s made up of thoughts, feelings, and traits that — at some point in your life — didn’t feel safe, acceptable, or “good enough” to show.

Maybe you were taught:

“Don’t be too emotional”
“Don’t be angry”
“Be strong”
“Be nice”

So what happens?

Those parts don’t disappear.
They just go underground.

And over time, they can show up in ways you might not expect:

Overreacting in certain situations
Feeling triggered by specific people
Judging others for traits you struggle to accept in yourself
Patterns in relationships you can’t quite explain

Here’s the key idea:

Your shadow isn’t something to get rid of — it’s something to understand.

Because often, hidden in the shadow are not just the difficult parts…
but also your unmet needs, your boundaries, and even your strengths.

The work isn’t about becoming “perfect.”
It’s about becoming more aware.

👉 Noticing what triggers you
👉 Getting curious instead of critical
👉 Asking: “What part of me is reacting right now?”

That’s where real growth starts.

Do I have ADHD?

It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked right now.

And if you’ve been wondering this yourself — you’re not alone.

But let’s pause for a second…
Because not everything that feels like ADHD is ADHD.

Struggling to focus?
Procrastinating?
Feeling overwhelmed?
Starting things and not finishing them?

Yes — these can be signs of ADHD.
But they can also show up in anxiety, burnout, poor sleep, stress… or just a life that’s overloaded.

Here’s the challenge 👇

👉 Have these patterns been present since childhood?
👉 Do they show up across multiple areas of your life (work, home, relationships)?
👉 Are they consistent — not just during stressful periods?
👉 Are they actually impacting your day-to-day functioning?

Because ADHD isn’t just about being distracted sometimes.
It’s about ongoing patterns that genuinely interfere with how you live, work, and connect.

And here’s the part most people skip:

A diagnosis isn’t the goal — understanding yourself is.

Whether it is ADHD or not, getting clarity matters.
Because once you understand what’s really going on, you can actually do something about it.

So if this question has been sitting in the back of your mind…
Don’t rely on TikTok. Don’t self-diagnose.

Get a proper assessment. Ask the questions. Do it properly.

You deserve real answers — not guesses.

What does a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP give you?

A Mental Health Care Plan gives you access to rebated sessions with a psychologist — but it’s not a quick fix.

Here’s what you can expect 👇

👉 A space to talk openly and feel understood
👉 Practical tools to manage stress, anxiety, and mood
👉 A clearer understanding of your patterns
👉 Real change using evidence based tools — built over time, not overnight

And the key part?

You’ll get the most out of it when you show up honestly and consistently.

If you’ve been thinking about using your plan, this is your sign to take the next step.

Quick reality check…

When was the last time you actually paused?

Not scrolled.
Not distracted yourself.
Not pushed through.

Just… stopped and grounded yourself in the moment.

Because here’s the hard truth:
Most people aren’t overwhelmed because life is too much.
They’re overwhelmed because they never stop long enough to reset their nervous system.

We live in constant “go mode” — and then wonder why we feel anxious, reactive, or exhausted.

So here’s your challenge 👇

👉 Before you reach for your phone today — take 5 slow breaths
👉 Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear
👉 Drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw.
👉 Ask yourself: “What do I actually need right now?”

Grounding isn’t complicated.
But it does require something most people avoid:

Awareness.

And if you’re honest…
that’s often the uncomfortable part.

Because slowing down means you can’t ignore what’s really going on anymore.

But here’s the upside:
When you learn to ground yourself, you stop reacting to everything —
and start responding with intention.

That’s where real change happens.

Most couples don’t struggle because of a lack of love.
They struggle because they’ve never been taught how to communicate, repair, and reconnect when things get hard.

Here’s the challenge 👇

👉 Can you turn toward your partner instead of away this week?
👉 Can you soften your start-up instead of leading with criticism?
👉 Can you take responsibility — even just 1% — in your next conflict?
👉 Can you pause and regulate before reacting?

These aren’t just “nice ideas.”
They’re the exact skills backed by decades of research that make relationships last.

At the heart of strong relationships are a few key habits:

1. Building deep friendship and emotional connection
2. Managing conflict (not avoiding it)
3. Repairing quickly when things go wrong
4. Creating shared meaning and goals together

Simple? Yes.
Easy? Not always.

But here’s the truth:
Great relationships aren’t found — they’re built. Intentionally. Consistently.

So this week, don’t wait for your partner to change.
Start with one small shift yourself and see what happens.

You might be surprised.

Every day is a new chance to step into your strength. Being the best version of yourself doesn’t mean being perfect—it means showing up, taking small steps forward, and choosing growth, even when it feels hard.

Your challenges don’t define you. What defines you is your courage to face them, your willingness to keep learning, and your determination to move closer to the life you want.

Take a deep breath, trust yourself, and remember—you already have what it takes.

Research shows that it’s not about never arguing – it’s about how you handle conflict and how you repair afterwards. The Gottman Method, developed from over 40 years of research, has identified the key habits that make relationships last: building friendship, managing conflict constructively, and creating shared meaning together.

At Advantage Psychology, our couples counsellors use the Gottman Method to help couples strengthen communication, deepen connection, and rebuild trust.

💜 We’re excited to share that couples counselling is now available at our practice. Because every relationship deserves the tools to thrive, not just survive.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than habits or quirks—it’s a cycle of intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions) that can feel overwhelming and difficult to manage. Many people living with OCD feel trapped by these patterns, but effective, evidence-based treatments are available.

One approach that has shown strong results is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Originally developed for trauma, EMDR is now recognised as a highly effective treatment for OCD. It helps the brain process intrusive thoughts and reduce the distress they cause, breaking the cycle of obsession and compulsion.

At Advantage Psychology Group, our trained psychologists use EMDR alongside other proven therapies to support people living with OCD. With the right guidance, real and lasting change is possible.
