Our Commitment to Child Safety & Wellbeing

Silkwood Stars Kindergarten and ELC is committed to creating a child safe organisation where all children and young people are safe and feel safe. We have a greater focus on safety for those children and young people who are considered more at risk to abuse and neglect. We actively support and facilitate participation and inclusion of Aboriginal Children

, children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD), those who are unable to live at home, children with a disability and/or children from sexually and gender diverse groups (LGBTQIA+). We have commitment to managing both physical and online environments to keep children and young people safe through governance, systems, and processes. This statement provides the framework for the organisational approach to complying with best practice by aligning with Victorian Child Safety Standards in conjunction with the guiding National Principles for Child Safety. We have a zero tolerance to abuse, racism, bullying and discrimination. We have an explicit commitment to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children.

More Than a Poem… A Different Way of Learning

This is not just a poem we read to children.
And this is not just an activity we complete.
This is how we teach.
While many approaches focus on outcomes,
we begin with wonder.
While others may guide children toward one answer,
we open space for many possibilities.
In our environment, children are not told what to see
they are invited to notice.
To follow the ants without rushing.
To question where they are going.
To feel the bark and describe its story.
To pause… and listen to Country.
We don’t rush to the final product.
We value the thinking, the questioning, the exploration that happens along the way.
Because learning is not a worksheet.
It is not a fixed result.
It is a lived experience.
Here, children are researchers.
They are decision-makers.
They are co-constructors of knowledge.
And this poem becomes more than words
it becomes a pathway into deep thinking, connection, and respect for the world around them. This is the difference.
We don’t just teach children what to learn
we nurture how they see.

Wishing everyone a joyful and meaningful Sri Lankan New Year!

As we welcome this special time, we come together with our families, our communities, and our shared traditions — celebrating renewal, reflection, and new beginnings. May this New Year bring warmth into our homes, peace into our hearts, and hope into all that we do.

Let us carry forward the values that guide us — respect, kindness, and togetherness — while creating moments of laughter, connection, and joy with those around us.

May your days be filled with happiness, prosperity, and good health. Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa!

At Silkwood Stars, we have been eagerly looking forward to celebrating Harmony Week — a time to celebrate inclusion, respect, and a true sense of belonging for all.

Throughout the week, we have had the privilege of learning alongside our families, who so generously shared their celebrations, traditions, and cultural stories. Together, we explored rich knowledge, listened to familiar and new languages, discovered meaningful practices, and even talked about some delicious foods loved across different cultures.

We are especially grateful to the parents and grandparents who spent time with us in the centre, reading stories from their cultures and creating moments of connection, curiosity, and joy for the children. Through these shared experiences, the children explored new ideas, asked thoughtful questions, and developed a growing appreciation for the diverse world around them — building understanding, respect, and empathy.

To mark this special occasion, the children came dressed in orange and some colored their hair orange — a beautiful symbol of inclusion, belonging, and respect. It was a vibrant and heartfelt way to celebrate the strength of our shared community.

Harmony Week reminds us that when we come together with openness and kindness, we create a space where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. These experiences continue to guide how we learn, connect, and grow together each day.

Thank you Anthony Semann from Semann & Slattery for delivering an inspirational PD on 'Positive interactions with children'. My takeaways were the power of relationships, small group teaching, the power of routines and consistency, and last but not least, rights and responsibility.

Thank you to our fellow colleagues from around Rowville who attended the session.
