Bulgarians are a great exercise to build quad strength… but you have to ensure you’re doing them to bias your quads and not your glutes if that’s your goal.

We prescribe bulgarians a lot because they are a great exercise for building knee tolerance to load, as well as single leg strength for runners. It’s and exercise I’d put in almost everyone’s programming!

This is a triple extension wall drill.

We're aiming for hip, knee and ankle extension.
Notice the common deficit in inner range knee extension and ankle plantar flexion strength. As this athlete does the switch, the knee doesn't achieve full extension and he then needs to adjust after the movement. He also can't achieve a strong calf contraction to stay up on the ball of the foot.

This is important rehab for athletes returning to sprint sports (basketball, rugby, soccer etc).

Stress fracture recovery ⌛️🦴

Not all injuries are equal. Bone stress injuries are unfortunately becoming more prevalent, especially with running absolutely booming.

I’ve had this tibial stress fracture on and off for a few years now. After 12 + months of consistent training/sport, I had a re-fracture from increasing my training load, not listening to my body and not fuelling. This has meant a very slowww recovery 🐌

Having a good team around you is SO important.
I’ve been fortunate to have the guidance of and to keep me on track and looking at what I’ve missed in the past with my recovery.

Just a reminder that if you have a pain that just won’t subside/suspicion of stress injury, to get it checked asap and get a thorough rehab plan how we can guide you through. It is not just about rest.

Stay tuned for my next phase of rehab!

1) Sleep Quality
🧠 Recovery isn’t just physical…it’s biological. Poor sleep slows down tissue healing, reduces pain tolerance, and affects motivation and consistency.
👉 Even one or two nights of poor sleep can make your rehab sessions feel harder and your progress slower.
2) Stress & Mental Load
😣 High stress levels increase cortisol, tighten muscles, and alter how your brain perceives pain. This means you might feel more sore or stiff, even when your tissues are healing fine.
👉 Emotional stress = physical stress.
3) Consistency (Not Intensity)
💪 It’s not about smashing your exercises; it’s about showing up regularly. Missed sessions or inconsistent effort delay your body’s adaptation process.
👉 You don’t need perfection - you just need consistency over time.
