Swallowing is something most of us don’t think twice about, until it’s not easy.

For many people living with neurological conditions, injury or illness, swallowing can become challenging, stressful, and even unsafe. It can impact nutrition, hydration and the simple enjoyment of eating and drinking with others.

On Swallowing Awareness Day, we’re highlighting the importance of recognising swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and getting the right support early.

Our speech pathology team is here to help, with practical strategies, personalised therapy, and compassionate care to make eating and drinking safer, easier and more enjoyable.

If you or someone you care for is having trouble swallowing, you’re not alone. Reach out, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Move to the rhythm. Find your flow.

Our Neuro Dance Therapy classes are for people living with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, brain injury, or dementia. They are about more than exercise. They are about moving in ways that feel good, safe, and possible.

With music leading the way and gentle guidance throughout, each class supports balance, coordination, and confidence. While strong research highlights the positive impact of dance on mobility and motor function, what truly matters is how it feels in the room - focused, supportive, and enjoyable.

You can participate seated or standing, and everything is adapted to suit you.

No dance experience needed, just a willingness to give it a go.

Meet 27-year-old Adeel. He’s living with Motor Neurone Disease and, over the past four months, has taken up crocheting with support from his Recreational Therapist, Taleah, who helped create a custom setup that works for him.

As a kid, Adeel used to knit with his aunty, so crocheting feels like a natural continuation of something he’s always enjoyed. It helps him work on his dexterity, and it’s also something he genuinely loves doing. With a few thoughtful adjustments, he’s continued to build his skills and create new pieces, and he’s pretty proud of what he’s making. We love them too Adeel 😊

Our Healthy Ageing, Healthy Moving talk at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club today was a great success, with a full house of 80 attendees.

We ran this session because we see every day how the right advice and early action can make a meaningful difference. Many common challenges that come with ageing, including reduced strength, balance concerns and loss of confidence with movement, can often be improved or prevented with an appropriate approach to exercise and nutrition.

Senior Physiotherapist Michael Phipps and Dietitian Rachel Ho delivered a clear, practical presentation on staying active and eating well as we age, sharing realistic strategies to support strength, mobility and overall wellbeing.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a positive and productive session.

This Recreational Therapy Month, we are spotlighting Taleah, our Recreational Therapist in Ryde.

Taleah brings a thoughtful, people centred approach to her role, supporting clients to return to or discover activities that bring meaning and enjoyment to their lives. She works alongside clients through a wide range of activities including crochet, gaming, cycling, surfing, fishing, swimming and more, tailored to individual goals and interests.

When asked what she loves about her role, Taleah shares "I love the opportunity to work alongside our clients, developing new ways for them to engage in their favourite activities, or helping them find new interests that bring them joy"

February is Recreational Therapy Month, and we’re proud to recognise our recreational therapists.

They support people to rebuild skills, regain independence, and reconnect with meaningful activities, often in moments that feel small but make a big difference.

We’re grateful for the impact they have every day.

𝗔 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁-𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝘂̈𝘃𝗲𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 for generously donating a 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔-𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶 𝟱𝟰𝟬—along with delivery—to our LifeWorks Sargood on Collaroy gym. 🎉

This helpful gift came about during one of Royal Rehab Foundation’s appeals, when Müve Tech offered a gift-in-kind donation instead of a monetary contribution. And what a gift it is!

The 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶 is a therapy device designed for passive, assistive, or active movement of both upper and lower limbs. It’s perfect for strengthening and mobilising clients whose mobility is restricted due to injury, surgery, or musculoskeletal conditions. And lastly, thanks to its portability, our clients at LifeWorks Sargood have the bonus to take their workouts outdoors and enjoy the beautiful Collaroy surroundings while staying active. 🌊💪

Today is a day to recognise the lives, voices, and contributions of people with disability and to think about what we can do to make communities more inclusive.

Across Royal Rehab Group, our focus is on providing the support, tools, and opportunities people need to take part in life on their own terms. Inclusion is not just a goal, it is about everyday actions such as listening, learning, and designing spaces and services alongside the people who use them.

Every step we take towards accessibility makes a difference, and together we can build communities where everyone can fully participate and belong. Today is a reminder to keep that momentum going. To stay curious, stay engaged, and keep championing inclusion in the everyday moments that matter.

• Alex Ritcher – customised personal care solutions using 3D printing.
• David Simpson – technological innovations supporting independence in hotel environments.
• Jason Redhead – advancements in functional electrical stimulation and its impact on quality of life.
• Professor Julie Pryor – presenting on How nurses add value to SCI patient rehabilitation.

Collaborative workshop:
