AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) gives children and adults access to share their voice. This can include gestures, signs, pictures, communication boards, or high-tech speech-generating devices.
One of the biggest myths about AAC is that a child has to be “ready” before using it, or that it will stop them from learning to talk. The truth is, children don’t need to prove readiness, AAC gives them access to language right now. Research also shows that AAC never prevents speech. In fact, it can often support and encourage language development.

Every voice matters. Every way of communicating is valuable. This month, let’s celebrate all the ways children and adults express themselves and remind our communities that communication is a human right.

Our work as Speechies is often rewarding, but it can also be emotionally and mentally demanding — balancing caseloads, supporting families, navigating paperwork, and giving so much of ourselves to others.

This World Mental Health Day is a reminder to:

🌱 Set healthy boundaries

☕ Take breaks without guilt

🤝 Lean on colleagues and support networks

💤 Prioritise rest as much as productivity

💜 Give yourself the same compassion you give to clients

Caring for ourselves allows us to keep caring well for others.

To all the SLPs out there: your mental health matters, and you are making a difference every single day. 🕊️

Day 4 💚 Communication is powerful. It’s how we connect, belong, and stand up for ourselves. 💬

As speech pathologists, we support individuals to:

✅ Build confidence to express their needs and wants

✅ Develop skills for self-advocacy in school, work, and community settings

✅ Find their voice in moments of challenge—like standing up to bullying or seeking acceptance

✅ Use the communication tools that work best for them (spoken words, AAC, sign, writing)

Day 3 of Speech Pathology Week. ✨Inclusion through communication✨

Every voice matters. Every way of communicating deserves respect. Whether it is through words, gestures, signs or devices, when we listen, value and support all forms of expression we create a world where everyone belongs 💜🌍

One of the most heartwarming moments in therapy is watching a child’s eyes light up when they are understood. Seeing them join in play, laugh with peers and feel truly included through their unique way of communicating is a reminder that connection is always possible.

✨ Speech Pathology Week Day 2: Confidence through Communication ✨ (we're behind on our days ooops) 😬

Speech pathologists help people build confidence by supporting clear and effective communication. 💬🌟 Whether it’s getting first words, producing speech sounds, managing stuttering, or finding the right words...being able to express yourself clearly opens the door to confidence and connection. 🫶

Today, we celebrate the power of communication in helping people share their voices with pride. 💙

✨ Speech Pathology Week 2025 – Day 1 ✨
Theme: Connection through Communication 💬

Communication is more than words - it’s how we build relationships, share ideas, and feel understood. As speech pathologists, we support people of all ages to connect in the ways that matter most.

💡 This might mean:
👧 Helping a child join in play with friends
🧑 Supporting a teen to succeed at school and socially
🧑‍🦳 Guiding an adult after a stroke to reconnect with loved ones
💻 Giving someone a voice through a communication device

Because at the heart of it all…
💛 Communication is connection. Connection is everything.

It’s Book Week 2025! Reading to children isn’t just about stories—it’s about building brains, bonding, and boosting language skills that will help them for life.

When we read with our kids, we’re helping them:

🗣 Grow their vocabulary – every story adds new words to their world

🧠 Strengthen comprehension – they learn to make sense of ideas, events, and emotions

💬 Develop conversation skills – asking “What do you think will happen next?” encourages thinking and talking

❤️ Build connection – storytime is a safe, cosy moment to share together

📖 What’s your child’s current favourite book? Share it below so we can inspire each other!

Did you know… Speech pathologists don’t work alone? We’re part of your child’s support team – and that team might include:
👩‍⚕️ Paediatricians
🧠 Psychologists
✋ OTs
🦷 Dentists
🧩 Behaviour support
🧬 Neurologists
👂 Audiologists
📚 Teachers… and more!

Why? Because your child is so much more than one skill or one setting.

We want to see the whole picture — their strengths, needs, and how they grow across home, school, and play.

Here’s what teamwork means to us:
→ 🤝 Sharing knowledge across professionals
→ 🎯 Aligning goals and strategies for consistency
→ 🔁 Referring when something’s out of our scope - so each professional does what they do best
→ 🚀 Maximise progress and support families more holistically
But it’s not just who is on the team — it’s how we work together.
💬 Good communication between professionals is key.

When we stay connected and update each other (with your consent!), we can:
✅ Provide consistent strategies across settings
🚫 Avoid mixed messages
🔍 Notice patterns or progress early
🤗 Support your child more effectively together
When we collaborate, we don’t just talk — we team up.

Because helping your child thrive isn’t a one-person job. It takes a village. 🧡

At Kairos Speech, we are committed to advocating for our clients. We actively refer when needed and are building a network of multilingual professionals to meet the unique needs of the families we support.

💬 Have you had a great experience with a collaborative team? Tag them below or share your story — we’d love to hear!

✨ Self-regulation starts with co-regulation ✨

We often expect children to calm down on their own. But the truth is self-regulation isn’t something kids are born knowing how to do.

🧠 What is co-regulation?
Co-regulation is when an adult helps a child manage their emotions and body state by staying calm, connected, and supportive. It’s those moments when you sit with them through big feelings, model deep breaths, or offer a gentle touch and soothing words.

💡 Why is it important?
Children learn to regulate through repeated experiences of being co-regulated. Their nervous system needs your calm presence to feel safe before it can learn to calm itself.

🤝 Before we expect kids to ‘self-regulate,’ we need to show them how, by being their safe base first.

Speech pathology is more than just teaching sounds.

It’s about connection, communication, confidence, expression, and belonging.
