March 18th is Swallowing Awareness Day!

Many people think swallowing problems only happen when someone coughs or chokes while eating. But swallowing actually involves many small muscles working together — especially the tongue.

When the tongue rests low in the mouth or pushes forward during swallowing (often called tongue thrust), it can affect swallowing patterns and sometimes speech, breathing or dental development.

If you’ve ever noticed your child/you:

• rest with their mouth open

• push their tongue forward when swallowing

• have messy swallows

• take a long time to chew or gets tired of chewing

it may be worth chatting with a speech pathologist.

Awareness helps families notice the early signs and support healthy development 💛

This is new.

From 1 March 2026, Medicare has expanded the M10 disability pathway for certain speech and fluency diagnoses.

Eligible children under 25 may access:
• 8 assessment services
• 20 treatment sessions
• Across a lifetime

But:
It’s diagnosis-based.
It requires GP or specialist confirmation.
It’s not automatic funding.
And it’s separate from a GP Care Plan.

If you’re unsure whether this applies to your child, speak with your GP - or message us and we’ll help you understand the pathway.

Save this for later or share with someone who might need it!

“How was your day?”
Big question. Tiny answer.

After school, most children are tired, hungry or still processing their day. When we ask them to summarise everything at once, that’s a huge language and thinking load.

Instead, try this:

✨ Regulate first
✨ Help them tell the story
✨ Expand their emotional vocabulary
✨ Build reflection and resilience
✨ Model by sharing your own day

For Kindy – Year 2, smaller and more specific questions support:

🧠 Narrative skills (beginning, middle, end)
💛 Emotional vocabulary
🔄 Flexible thinking
🛠 Problem solving
🤝 Connection with you

And don’t forget - sometimes the best way to get your child talking… is to start talking yourself.

“I felt nervous before a meeting today.”
“I felt proud when I finished something tricky.”

You’re modelling emotional language in real time.

Save this for your after-school routine 💛
Which question are you going to try first?

Meet Sprout 💚

Sprout represents the quiet growth we see every day at Kairos - the small steps, the steady effort, the light-bulb moments that make everything click.

You’ll start seeing him around here a little more.

Sharing ideas. Encouraging progress.

Because development isn’t a race.
It’s a journey - and we’re growing together 🌱

Preparing for school isn’t about rushing children into academics. It’s about helping them feel ready.

Many children have mixed feelings about starting school - excited, curious, worried, sad, all at once. And that’s completely normal.

Books, open conversations, play, and shared experiences help children:
• make sense of their feelings
• build confidence in new situations
• practise asking for help
• feel safe to try, even when something feels hard

You don’t need to “fix” the worry ... just make space for it, name it, and walk alongside your child through it.

These conversations and intentional play and moments count more than we think 💛
