This year, the Horticultural Therapy Society of NSW Inc, aka Cultivate NSW, celebrates its 35th birthday.

We will celebrate this amazing achievement, face to face, as soon as we are able which is looking likely to be in December this year. In the meantime, over the next few months we will bring you some stories from people who have been closely involved with the formation and growth of Cultivate as well as snippets from the archives. We will also look at ways in which we can commemorate our 35th anniversary in more tangible ways.

Do you have suggestions as to ways in which you would like to commemorate a very significant birthday?

We would love to hear from you.

Don’t let a small balcony stop you from having a wonderful sensory experience.

Ordering online is so easy and you will find many plants that will thrive in your particular space. Consider things like light, drainage, and placement. Maybe a hanging garden on a wall is a better option to save precious balcony space.

You still want to sit out there with your cup of choice, right?

And plants are always a great way to start a conversation with your neighbours or as a privacy screen - your choice:-)!

Cultivate member Pete Wann, a Horticultural Consultant, shared an activity he and his wife created in their Newcastle neighbourhood. ..
In my street, I’ve created a social Horticulture opportunity. My wife painted a sign that tells the community to help themselves to the lemon tree as well as the herbs in our front garden, a money tin is there if they want to give something. There is something about picking and smelling a fresh lemon straight from the tree. I see people of all ages stopping by, I get to meet people in my neighbourhood, some I get to have a chat with. There was even one young couple that dropped in some lemon slice to say thanks for the lemons...

CREATE YOUR GARDEN IN THE SMALLEST OF PLACES. Planting a garden can start anywhere and in the smallest of places. A teapot, an old pair of shoes, or perhaps your kids shoes. What a great project to do with your kids this weekend. Plant some succulents from cuttings or perhaps herbs from seeds. Check your local Facebook Community Group or your Nextdoor Group for a swap or purchase.

Have you planted something recently in a small space you want to share?
We’d love to see the results.

My client Frank, lives alone after his wife passed away some years ago. We garden together, chat about life pausing for morning tea (always having something sweet I’ve brought), then it’s out to the garden again. Frank is 82, and lonely. He is lucky though, seeing his family every week but says his loneliness makes him sad. This rose was planted and grown by his wife and gets a lot of attention from Frank now she has gone. He checks on it daily and feels it’s a part of her. Gardens are more than just pretty and are often a part of someone’s history. A place to remember. A warm space that is personal. I love working in the garden with Frank. Although he says he is not a gardener (he insists he was the garden brawn to his wife’s brain) I learn so much from him in the way of patience and resilience. I love my time shared in his garden. Do you have a similar story?

How's everybody doing? Spring is here and we want to put a little colour back into our cheeks. Grab a cuppa, or your beverage of choice and have a little read of Cultivate Almost Weekly Times. Along with a little snapshot of Cultivate Activities, we have a great book review and a couple of film suggestions. Enjoy!
