There’s one Pilates cue I don’t use:
“Push your spine into the mat.”
For March MATness, I’m revisiting some classical mat exercises and sharing how I approach teaching them - informed by my own experience in managing spinal issues.
When people hear push, it often leads to gripping through the back or forcing the lumbar spine flat instead of creating control from the centre.
In the pelvic curl, I prefer to think about the pelvis initiating the movement, allowing the spine to follow and articulate gradually.
Living with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos and degenerative spine changes has made me very aware of the difference between tension and true support. I’m even more mindful of moving with control rather than forcing range.
For me, Pilates is about the intention behind the movement — creating precision and support rather than forcing range.
