The recent results of CHOICE sunscreen testing were disturbing, reproduced from their website below. When looking at this information, be aware that an SPF 30 sunscreen filters approximately 97% of UVB rays, while an SPF 50 sunscreen filters approximately 98%, but theoretically for longer. The take home messages from us:
- know what you're putting on your skin
- some sunscreen is better than no sunscreen
- nothing replaces shade or covering your skin

"Of the 20 sunscreens we tested, only four managed to match their SPF claims. Sixteen of the 20 sunscreens we tested failed.

Those failures ranged from a claimed SPF 50+ that actually tested at an SPF of just four, all the way through to results in the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Sunscreens that passed the SPF test
Cancer Council Kids Sunscreen SPF 50+ passed with a reported SPF of 52
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Wet Skin Sunscreen 50+ passed with a reported SPF of 72
Mecca Cosmetica To Save Body SPF 50+ Hydrating Sunscreen passed with a reported SPF of 51
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Lotion SPF 50 passed with a reported SPF of 56

Sunscreens that failed the SPF test
The most significant failure of the 20 products we tested was Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF 50+ Mattifying Zinc Skinscreen, which returned an SPF of 4.

In addition to this failure, plenty of sunscreens with an advertised SPF of 50 or 50+ returned lower SPF results.

SPF results in the 20s
Aldi Ombra 50+ – tested at 26
Banana Boat Baby Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ – tested at 28
Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Zinc Mineral Body Lotion – tested at 26
Cancer Council Everyday Value Sunscreen 50 – tested at 27
Cancer Council Ultra Sunscreen 50+ – tested at 24
Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Lotion SPF 50 – tested at 24
Woolworths Sunscreen Everyday Tube SPF 50+ – tested at 27

SPF results in the 30s
Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ – tested at 35
Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Fragrance Free Sunscreen – tested at 32
Cancer Council Kids Clear Zinc 50+ – tested at 33
Invisible Zinc Face + Body Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 – tested at 38

SPF results in the 40s
Coles SPF 50+ Sunscreen Ultra Tube – tested at 43
Nivea Sun Kids Ultra Protect and Play Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ – tested at 41
Nivea Sun Protect and Moisture Lock SPF 50+ Sunscreen – tested at 40

We have a new doctor coming!!

Introducing Dr Toni Frgacic, the newest GP to join Bay Doctors from February 2026.

Originally from Croatia, Toni completed his medical degree at the University of Zagreb before moving to the UK to broaden his experience across a range of hospital and community settings.

His training has taken him through emergency medicine, psychiatry, paediatrics, cardiology, and obstetrics and gynaecology - experience that gives him a well-rounded understanding of patient care at every stage of life.

After completing his GP training in England and achieving Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK, Toni has now decided to make the Bay his home, joining Bay Doctors to continue providing compassionate, holistic care to his patients.

Toni is passionate about supporting his local community and building long-term relationships with patients and families.

Please join us in welcoming Dr Frgacic to Bay Doctors

A friendly reminder on this beautiful sunny Thursday!
We value all of our patients at Bay Doctors and Skin Cancer Clinic. We also value the time and expertise of our doctors and nurses. We appreciate that sometimes circumstances prevent people coming to their booked appointments and we are understanding of this. We would ask that if you are unable to attend, you give us as much notice as possible as we always have a waiting list of patients who need appointments. Our staff will always do their best to fit in unwell patients that need to be seen on the day and having prior notice of unfilled appointments enables us to see those patients in need.

Exciting news! We have a new doctor starting early September. Dr Emma Byrne will be working 3 days per week and this will assist with Dr Adamski’s patients needing to see a GP. She is experienced in general and acute medicine and comes from the country so we think she’ll fit right in!

We also are working hard with a male doctor from the UK who should be working with us from about February next year. There are so many hoops to jump through bringing someone here from overseas. We will keep you all posted.

An open letter to patients from Dr Mark Adamski

Dear Patients,

It is with mixed feelings and great fondness, that I have decided to leave Port Stephens to pursue my old passion of rural general practice.

I am moving to a town in the Central West that has been without a doctor for over a year. I will miss the good people of the Bay and it has been my privilege to care for you, whilst also being confident that I am leaving you in the capable and caring hands of my colleagues at Bay Doctors and Skin Cancer Clinic.

I understand that this may come as a little shock to you. I also understand the difficulty of finding a GP in the area. Can I assure you that Bay Doctors are mobilising at the moment to try and find both a short-term and long-term solution to addressing your health needs.

The staff at Bay Doctors will be in contact with you when they have found a replacement for me. We would respectfully ask that you not ring the practice with enquiries about who my replacement will be as our reception staff are already extremely busy. The existing GPs will work together to see my patients until a suitable permanent GP is secured. They will also put regular updates on their website and Facebook site.

Of course, we encourage you to please call the surgery to book appointments as they are required. Any forward-booked appointments will be honoured. My last day of consulting will be Friday the 27th of June.

Once again, it has been a privilege to look after you in Port Stephens.

Yours sincerely
Dr Mark Adamski
