We want our deadly mums to drink more water this summer!

Staying hydrated helps keep you cool and is especially important when pregnant and postpartum (whether you’re breastfeeding or not) 🫗

If water isn’t your favourite, try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime, or some sugar free cordial!

Keeping cool in the heat can help to keep both you and bub safe and comfy over summer☀️

We’ve listed some of our favourite tips below!

👕 Dress lightly – dress you and bub in lightweight and breathable fabrics.
🍼 Hydrate regularly – offer bub more frequent feeds and make sure you drink plenty of water too.
❄️ Keep cool – use damp cloths on the skin, fans or lukewarm baths to keep bub cool.
⛱️ Stay sun safe – seek shade, use sunscreen and avoid peak sun hours to keep you and bub sun safe.
🍃Create airflow – place a fan by bub’s cot to ensure it has airflow.

The heatwave is over for now.

We recommend you check with those most at risk including Elders, Mob with a medical condition, Mob who work outside and pregnant and breastfeeding women for at least three days – this is how long it takes for our bodies to recover from a heatwave.

It might take your home a long time to cool down, so be aware that it might still be hot inside, even at night.

Keep drinking water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Be careful around trees – they often drop limbs when it’s hot.

South East Queensland is in a heatwave! Here's some tips to keep you cool and safe:

💧 Drink plenty of cold water
🚫 Skip the alcohol and caffeine
🥗 Eat cool foods and try not to use your oven, it heats up your home
👀 Check your wee—dark colour or not going often means you need more water
🧊 Place a cool cloth on your neck with a fan blowing it
👕 Wear light, loose clothing and protect yourself from the sun when outdoors
❤ Check in on your Mob! Elders, bubs, jarjum, pregnant or breastfeeding women or Mob with a medical condition need extra support during a heatwave ️

If you have a medical condition, yarn with your local Community Controlled Health Service or call Mob Link on 1800 254 354.

For emergencies, call 000.

South East Queensland is experiencing a heat wave and severe thunderstorms this week.

Pregnant & breast-feeding mums, bubs and jarjum need extra care during this time.

Here’s how to protect yourself and your loved ones from the heat:
- Stay hydrated, ensure your bub and jarjum are drinking water throughout the day, even if they aren’t thirsty. Make sure you are also staying hydrated, stay away from sugary and caffeinated drinks.
- Exercise, play or do outside activities early in the morning or later in the evening with a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses on.
- Low energy activities like board games, reading, colouring in or watching movies can keep mums, bubs and jarjum cool and entertained
- Run a cool bath or use a damp cloth to cool down, especially if you’re pregnant
- Visit a free library or shopping centre, these venues are typically air conditioned
- Avoid wearing or dressing your bub and jarjum dark colours, they attract and absorb heat

If you have an appointment, and you can’t get to it with airconditioned transport, try rescheduling or check if you can do it via telehealth.

If you or your little one have a medical condition, yarn with your BiOC contact or call Mob Link on 1800 254 354.

For emergencies, call 000.
