Can Diet Help Children with ADHD?

This study looked at whether changing a child's diet could improve symptoms of ADHD. It involved 100 children aged 4–8 who were diagnosed with ADHD.

What Did They Do?

The study had two parts:

Phase 1 (Open-Label Diet Trial):

Half of the children followed a strict elimination diet for 5 weeks. The other half were given general healthy eating advice. The researchers wanted to see if removing certain foods would improve behaviour.

Phase 2 (Double-Blind Food Challenge):

The children who improved the most (over 40% better on an ADHD symptom scale) in the diet group then reintroduced certain foods one by one, without knowing what they were eating (neither did the researchers—this was double-blind).

Foods were classified as “high” or “low” based on a blood test measuring IgG levels, a type of immune response.

What Did They Find?

Children on the elimination diet improved significantly more than those on the general healthy diet.

▸ ADHD symptoms dropped by about 24 points on a behaviour scale.
▸ The improvement was statistically significant (not due to chance).

When foods were added back, symptoms returned in about 63% of kids, regardless of the IgG level.
▸ This means IgG testing wasn’t useful in predicting which foods would trigger symptoms.

No side effects or safety concerns were reported.

Time standing on one leg had better correlation to aging than grip strength and walking speed.

People over 50 who can stand on one leg for 30 seconds are aging gracefully, particularly if it's not their strong leg, a new study finds.
