How common is mental health? 🌿

According to the most recent National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing, the prevalence (commonness) of 12-month mental disorders in Australia are:
β€’ Anxiety disorders (affecting 3.4 million people or about 17% of the population)
β€’ Affective (mood) disorders (affecting 1.5 million people or about 7.5% of the population)
β€’ Substance use disorders (affecting 650,000 people or just over 3.3% of the population).

An estimated 8,514,700 Australians aged 16-85 (approximately 43% of the population) have experienced at least one mental disorder at some point in their lives.

Do these stats surprise you? πŸ“Š

🀯 RECOGNISING SIGNS OF MENTAL DISTRESS AT WORK 🀯

Sarah and Bec were coworkers in a busy office. Sarah was always cheerful and outgoing, but one day, Bec noticed that she seemed withdrawn and distant.

Concerned, Bec approached Sarah to check in on her.

After a chat, Sarah confided in Bec that she had been feeling overwhelmed and anxious lately, but she didn't know where to turn for help.

Recognising the signs of mental distress, Bec remembered her MHFA training and knew she had to act.

πŸ‘‚ Bec listened attentively to Sarah's concerns and offered her support.

πŸ’• She encouraged Sarah to seek professional help.

πŸ“š Providing her with resources and information about mental health services in their area.

Thanks to Bec's training, Sarah felt supported and empowered to take the next steps towards recovery.

Through this experience, Bec realised the importance of MHFA training. It equipped her with the knowledge and skills to recognise when someone is struggling and to offer the right support at the right time.

By being trained in MHFA, Bec was able to make a positive difference in Sarah's life and help break down the stigma surrounding mental health πŸ’š

Bec & Sarah are (obviously) fictitious characters playing a real-world scenario. This story might help us think through experiences or conversations we've had like this in the workplace before.

Maybe you've experienced chats like this. Did you feel equipped? Did you feel ready to help a colleague?

With MHFA training, you can feel confident and be empowered to provide meaningful support when it's needed most. 🌻

🌿 Understanding Mental Health 🧠

Hey everyone! Today, let's talk about mental health. It's a topic that's often misunderstood, so here's a simple breakdown:

πŸ” What is Mental Health?
Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

🌟 Why is Mental Health Important?
Just like physical health, mental health is crucial for our overall well-being. It impacts every aspect of our lives, from how we feel about ourselves to how we interact with others and handle life's challenges.

πŸ’‘ Myth Buster: Mental Health vs. Mental Illness
Mental health is not just about mental illness. It's about our overall well-being. We all have mental health, and it's okay to not be okay sometimes. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

🌻 Breaking the Stigma
Educating ourselves and others about mental health helps break down the stigma surrounding it. It's important to create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable talking about their mental health.

🌱 Exciting Announcement! From Plants with Purpose to Mental Health First Aid 🌿

Hey everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share some important updates with you all.

As some of you may remember, I previously operated a business called Plants with Purpose, where I aimed to spread positivity through plants. While that chapter was fulfilling, my journey took a turn in 2019 when I transitioned into full-time work in a women's residential rehab facility after completing my internship in community services.

Over the past eight years, I've gained invaluable experience in the community services sector. Last year I had the opportunity to undertake the Mental Health First Aid course, which provided me with insight and practical skills to support individuals struggling with mental health issues.

After completing the course, I realised the impact it had on both my professional and personal life. That's why I made the decision to become a Mental Health First Aid instructor, so that I can empower others with the knowledge and skills to support those experiencing mental health challenges.

With these changes in mind, I've decided to breathe new life into the Plants with Purpose business page, changing it to a platform to share information and updates about mental health.

This will include announcements about upcoming Mental Health First Aid courses that I'll be running, and hopefully other meaningful content (feel free to send me suggestions or ideas).

I understand that mental health may not be everyone's cup of tea, so please feel free to opt out of this group if it's not something you're interested in πŸ€—

However, if you choose to stay, I hope to bring you all value and insights that may positively impact your lives.

Thank you for your continued support!

This is our first post since 2019 (wow time flies!). Now I look forward to this new chapter of spreading awareness and support for mental health together 🌱
