Today on International Day of People With a Disability, we recognise those in our community that live with a disability and remind ourselves of the incredible achievements and contributions people with disabilities have made in our society.

16.9% of people in NSW live with a disability. But 90% of disabilities, including physical and mental health conditions, are invisible.

NSW Health is committed to creating a disability inclusive culture and community in our daily lives as well as in all healthcare services.

Tomorrow is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), which aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

“Women have historically been marginalised, and this disadvantage is multiplied for women with disability,” said Dr Jill Duncan, Deputy Chair of the Disability Council NSW and a 2022 NSW Woman of Excellence finalist.

“IDPwD is an important reminder that disability is a part of human diversity.”

“We can each practice a spirit of equity, which recognises disadvantage and power imbalances and the need for an intentional approach to providing genuine social inclusion, including improving educational outcomes and career progression opportunities for all people with disability.”

The NSW Disability Inclusion Plan 2021-25 provides a framework to improve the lives of people with disability in NSW. Find out more: https://dcj.nsw.gov.au/community-inclusion/disability-and-inclusion/nsw-disability-inclusion-plan.html
