"I have found such joy in helping clients regain their independence."
On International Nurses Day today, we're revisiting the recollections of retired Bolton Clarke nurses Sue and Susan. The technology may have changed (enormously!) but the drive to support people to live well remains at the heart of the work nurses do in the community. And for many people, it's life-changing.

Today, Saturday 25 April, our communities across Australia are coming together to commemorate Anzac Day on the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. For many, this whole week has been about reflecting and honouring those who have served in times of peace and war.

We were lucky enough to sit down with several veterans in the lead up to today and are honoured to be sharing their stories of resilience, comradery and hope.

For Bolton Clarke Coastal Waters aged care residents Dene and Les, the last 12 months have proven friendship will get you through anything. After the passing of both their wives around the same time last year, the team offered the idea that they get to know one another. Since meeting they have now become known around the home as “The Dynamic Duo” and are rarely seen apart, enjoying breakfasts and lunches together, heading out on bus trips and spending time soaking up the sunshine outdoors.

Today is International Women’s Day, and we’re recognising the foundational role women have played in our organisation, from its beginnings to the present. From Lady Janet Clarke’s tireless commitment to rallying government and community support for those most in need, to Prime Minister Alfred Deakin’s wife Pattie who accompanied our early nurses on their rounds, to our 16,000+ workforce today, Bolton Clarke has been shaped by the vision, hard work and expertise of generations of women across leadership, support and frontline care services.

On this day in 1926 we opened Melbourne’s first after care home to provide transitional care for people of all ages after a hospital stay. MDNS President Jessie Henderson described the hospital as “a new expression of an old need”. Today, we’re still finding new ways to meet community needs, from our parenting, birth and baby telephone helpline to telehealth, home and community support and in our retirement villages and aged care homes.
