NEWSLETTER EXERPT ON TRUTH:
In yoga, the practice of truth is one of the moral tenets (yamas) called SATYA. Of course, this tells us to speak and live truthfully, because if we don’t, ultimately, we are drained of energy (prana).
But if you break down the word further, it has a beautiful meaning:
SAT – existence or being
YA – deriving from
So, truth derives from our very own being and existence, from our experience. Much of what our yoga practice asks us to do is begin to delineate truth from experience.
There are two sides of this coin I meet when working with students and clients in more depth.
When they’ve taken on other people’s opinions and/or beliefs - I have to ask: Is it true? And guide them to feel it out within their own bodies.
Or, when or when they are doubting themselves, memories or their own personal experience I have to say: What if we trust our body and experience and it is true?
It can be tricky to ground, because truth is deeply woven with our unique existence and perspective. This is the heart of Satya—discovering the truth that emerges from the depths of your own being. As we move through these watery months, take a moment to pause and listen: What is true for you, right now, in this moment?
