The Waratah Beach SLSC sends our condolences to the families, friends, and surf life saving community on the sudden passing of SLSA president John Baker AM ESM.

“ Once a lifesaver always a lifesaver”

❤️💛

Vale John Baker AM ESM

The Surf Life Saving community is today mourning the sudden passing of Surf Life Saving Australia President John Baker AM ESM.

John, ‘JB’ was the seventh President since SLSA was established in 1907, serving in the role since 2021 after spending 14 years on the national board.

Surf Life Saving Australia CEO, Adam Weir, said John’s passion for Surf Life Saving was felt at all levels of the organisation and his loss will be felt by many.

“Today is terrible for our Surf Life Saving community, losing one of our most dedicated volunteers and leaders.

Beyond the accolades and awards, John was a beloved member of our Surf Life Saving community and will be missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Jo and his family and friends at this time,” he said.

Surf Life Saving SA President and National Director, Sarah Cutbush, said that the South Australian Surf Life Saving community had been devastated by the news.

“This is such a loss for our movement - of a leader, and of a friend.

“Our condolences go out to Jo and his family and friends, as well as Brighton SLSC - we will join you in keeping JB’s memory and legacy alive.”

Vale Elizabeth (Liz) Browne

A long-time member of Waratah Beach SLSC, Liz made a significant contribution to our club community over many years, with a passion that left a lasting legacy.

Liz first joined the club in 1988 and quickly became a valued member of the Waratah family. She was named Best Club Person for the 1997/98 season, and went on to serve as Club Secretary from 2001/02 to 2003/04. In recognition of her unwavering commitment and service, Liz was awarded Life Membership in 2003.

Liz passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by her devoted family.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her husband Hamish, sons Cameron and Stuart, daughters-in-law Elly, and her adored grandchildren Hayley and Lachlan.

Liz will be fondly remembered, deeply missed, and forever part of the Waratah family.

Celebrating Community Support at the Surf Club

We’re excited to share a positive update for our Surf Club community! Until now, all rubbish removal at the club has been at our own expense, and unfortunately, we haven’t had the means to segregate waste - making recycling a challenge.

That’s all changed thanks to the generosity of Wonthaggi Bunnings Warehouse Australia, who have donated four wheelie bins to the club. This fantastic contribution means we can now properly separate our waste and take real steps toward more sustainable practices.

A special shoutout also goes to the Sandy Point Men’s Shed, whose members kindly picked up the bins and will be helping us manage glass and can recycling at the club. We’re especially pleased to note that the Men’s Shed is a registered collection point for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, so eligible containers returned through the club will directly support local recycling efforts and community initiatives.

We are incredibly grateful for this support, which will make a real difference to our club and the environment. Huge thanks to Bunnings Wonthaggi and the SP Men’s Shed for helping us create a cleaner, greener Surf Club!

🌊 Waratah Beach Surf Life Saving Club would like to extend our sincere thanks toAusNet for their support through the second round of the Energy Resilience Community Fund.

☀️ With this funding, Waratah Beach SLSC will install solar panels and battery storage at the club.

🔋 The primary outcome of this project is to ensure a reliable power source during blackouts, enabling the club to maintain:

* Critical operations
* Communication
* Lighting
* Emergency response activities

🌱 Beyond emergency preparedness, the installation of a solar power system represents a sustainable and long-term energy solution for our not-for-profit surf lifesaving club. It will:

* Reduce reliance on traditional power sources
* Lower operational costs
* Allow cost savings to be reinvested into lifesaving services, training programs, and community initiatives

💡 AusNet’s investment in renewable energy solutions not only helps us prepare for severe weather events and prolonged outages but also builds long-term resilience for our community.

🙏 We are grateful for AusNet’s commitment to empowering local communities and enhancing energy security across Victoria.

Thank you for helping us deliver practical, lasting benefits to our region.

👏 We also wish to recognise the support provided by Sandy Point Community Power (SPCP) Inc. and the SLSA Grants team, who were pivotal in preparing our grant submission.

🚌 Have your say on the V/Line Coach service between Melbourne and the Bass Coast Districts that serve our vital communities and Surf Life Saving Clubs.

📢 The Department is considering INCREASING the time it takes to travel to and from Melbourne on the coach services by adding more than a 20-minute detour via Pakenham to an already 3-plus-hour journey.

🗣️ Please provide feedback in the community survey and say "No" to a detour through Pakenham!
engage.vic.gov.au/Yarram-Melbourne-VLine

📅 Or head to a drop-in session at Leongatha Memorial Hall on June 17 from 11am to 12.30pm

V/Line

We’re planning to increase services on the Yarram to Melbourne coach service.
