There are many funeral directors in Sydney but for over 30 years Southern Cross Funerals have been one of the most trusted. We’re family-owned, accredited and we cover the whole region – from the Central Coast down to Wollongong, Campbelltown, and everywhere in between.

We know that losing a loved one is the worst of times – stress and grief in equal measure. You may still be struggling to come to terms with what’s happened and also carrying the burden of expectation that you’ll be the one to arrange everything and deal with everyone. The burden of responsibility is huge. We have witnessed how overwhelming that can be. Our business is founded on one simple premise – to make the process of dealing with a funeral service and everything that comes with that – easier for you.

We provide comfort and relieve stress. We fill in the gaps and take on the responsibility for our clients when their world has been turned upside down. We make the hard goodbyes easier. We’re around for you.

x Matt

We received the lovliest email from one of our clients recently. She's given us permission to share here.

Good morning. Hoping you are well

My name is Jan **** and I recently farewelled my Dad through Southern Cross Engadine with Matt

I have spoken with Matt and expressed my deep gratitude to him for his love and support and wanted you to know what an exceptional team member you have in him. But I’m guessing you already know that

His love, empathy, drive and willingness to go above and beyond are amazing. He is a special human being. My sad experience was lightened with his help and compassion

It is very obvious this is not ‘just a job’ to Matt.

He brightens any room he enters and definitely my Dads farewell

I’m not a social media gal but if you would like to share my email on your platform I would be honoured

Thanks to Matt

Kind regards

Jan *****

How to start the Conversation

Talking about death doesn’t have to be heavy. It can be gentle, even uplifting.

Here are a few ways to begin:
Share a story – Mention a funeral you attended that felt meaningful and explain why.
Use milestones – Birthdays, anniversaries, or even Dying to Know Day can be natural moments to bring it up.
Ask questions – “Have you ever thought about what kind of funeral you’d want?” can open the door.
Write it down – If speaking feels hard, jot down your wishes and share them when you’re ready.

Why Talking About Death Is a Gift

Death is inevitable, but the way we prepare for it is deeply personal. Sharing your wishes, whether it’s the kind of service you want, the music you love, or the legacy you hope to leave, can be one of the most loving things you do for your family.

Here’s why it matters:
It removes guesswork – Families often struggle to make decisions during emotional times. Knowing your preferences helps them honour you with confidence.
It prevents conflict – When wishes are clear, there’s less room for disagreement or regret among loved ones.
It brings comfort – A well-planned farewell can be a source of healing, not just for those left behind, but for you too, knowing your story will be told your way.

It's World Teacher's Day tomorrow and we asked Matt to share about some of his favourite teachers.

If you're a teacher, thank you so much for what you do! Your influence can really last a lifetime.

If you've benefitted from an amazing teacher in your life, give a thumbs up or share this with them.

On International Day of Older Persons, we stop and remember the great value that our older population bring to our community.

It's a time to recognise the wisdom, stories, and contributions of older generations. Their experiences shape families, communities, and traditions, reminding us that every life stage holds value and meaning.

In our work, we are privileged to hear the stories of those who have lived long, rich lives. Honouring and preserving those stories is one of the most important ways we can celebrate older people— not just today, but every day.

Share your favourite piece of wisdom passed down to you by an older person!

There are various ways to celebrate the life of a loved one with a burial service.

We offer three options:

1. Graveside service
In these instances the service is carried out beside the burial site. In most cases, we will meet at the cemetery office to obtain clearance to attend the grave. With that granted the cortege then proceed directly to the grave where the service is held.

2. Chapel to graveside
The traditional funeral service is held within a chapel of the cemetery where mourners gather to say their final goodbyes. Once complete, the cortege, consisting of family, friends and dignitaries, proceed to the graveside for interment.

3. Place of worship to graveside
This service is held at a place of worship—a church, chapel, synagogue or mosque. From there, the cortege will proceed to the cemetery for interment.

We fill in the gaps and take on the responsibility when your world has been turned upside down. Call us 24 hours a day on 1300 087 937.
