Modern life takes a toll on our neck and shoulders. You may have heard the term text or tech neck - where the head is tilted forward & down for extended periods of time looking at devices. This posture, and the not inconsiderable weight of the head put excessive strain on the muscles which often leads to pain or stiffness. Add stress into the mix, and tension quickly builds.
So how can yoga help? If you have neck or shoulder pain, I recommend checking with your doctor first. Then, using small, slow, mindful movements gives your nervous system positive feedback. Focusing on the exhale helps to activate the relaxation response and release tension. The key: don’t overdo it.

Practising yoga can be a valuable tool for managing osteoarthritis, especially when done slowly and mindfully. Unlike more intense forms of exercise, gentle yoga can feel less intimidating. The key is to be consistent. Slow, mindful movement helps us develop a deeper awareness of our bodies, care for our joints more intentionally, and reduce discomfort over time.

As cold and flu viruses become more prevalent in the winter months, we're reminded just how important a strong immune system is.
Yoga offers powerful support for immune health in several ways. The movement of muscles in yoga postures helps circulate lymph, a vital fluid in the body’s defence system. At the same time, the wave-like motion of the diaphragm during mindful breathing gently massages the internal organs and the fascial matrix - both key players in maintaining a healthy immune response.

As a yoga teacher, I generally teach meditation from a yogic perspective. This month we focus on how we approach meditation in this way as well as how it connects to Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga 🧘‍♀️ૐ
