🗣️ Let’s talk lipoedema management.

🤷‍♀️ Although people can have common lipoedema symptoms, not everyone finds the same therapies helpful, or possible, or even affordable.

🎓 Knowledge is power - learn about the condition and discover what might work for you.

🌱 Start off small by trying one new thing at a time. Build it into your routine until it becomes a habit. Don’t get overwhelmed by trying to do all of the things, all of the time, straight off the bat.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Get support - you don’t have to go it alone.
Talk to others about things that are working for them.
Join the Lipoedema Australia page or attend a lipoedema lunch or coffee catch up. Feel comfortable sharing experiences in a safe space.

🌸 June is Lipoedema Awareness Month! A time to share knowledge and understanding of a disease that often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, and passed off as 'you just need to eat less and exercise more.' Not always that simple.

🧬 Lipoedema is a connective tissue disorder that predominantly affects women and is characterised by a disproportionate accumulation of adipose tissue (fat) in the body.

👉 It is categorised into different 'types' which are differentiated by where the affected tissue is found.

Type I - Buttocks and hips
Type II - Buttocks, hips and thighs
Type III - Buttocks, hips, thighs and lower legs to the ankle
Type IV - Arms
Type V - Lower legs

💡You might most readily recognise lipoedema in women that have a small waist which expands out to a disproportionately much larger hips and thighs, or in thick calves that stop abruptly at the ankle and lead into unaffected feet.

🪧Some signs and symptoms that may accompany lipoedema include:
- pain, aching or heaviness
- easy bruising
- affected tissue sensitive to touch
- affected tissue contains hard nodules with the texture of grains of rice or hard peas
- weight loss results in minimal impact to affected areas
- tissue growth and other symptoms often exacerbated at times of increased hormonal change eg puberty, pregnancy and menopause
- fat pads around the knees or ankle bones
- cuffing at the ankle
- joint hypermobility
- spider veins and varicose veins
- relatives with a similar body shape

Management strategies include:

⛽️ Compression therapy including garments and pumps
🥦 Nutritional management
🏊‍♀️ Exercise
💧 Manual lymphatic drainage
🤲 Remedial massage
👨‍⚕️Specialised liposuction for tissue reduction

👍 If this post has resonated with you, please like and share to spread the word, and stay tuned for more information on lipoedema this month.

⁉️ Do I have lymphoedema, or lipoedema?? (Or both!)

🌸 Lipoedema is a not so well known connective tissue disorder that presents as an abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue (fat) in the body.

🦵Fat deposits are most commonly found in the hips, legs and upper arms, and can give the body a disproportionate appearance.

💧 Lymphoedema is a build up fluid in body tissues that happens when the lymphatic system is overloaded.

🧬 This may be a congenital issue, or
can occur when the lymphatic system is damaged eg lymph node removal as a part of cancer treatment.

❓Lipoedema, lymphoedema and obesity, are often confused for one another, and misdiagnosis is not uncommon.

😵‍💫 To add further confusion to diagnosis, these three conditions can all be found alongside each other.

👩‍🎓Below is a great video that explains some of the differences between lipoedema and lymphoedema.

Cellulitis can be a serious complication of lymphoedema that is often caused by a bacterial infection.

🏥 If cellulitis is suspected, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms can progress quickly, leading to severe complications such as blood infections (sepsis), bone infections, or even death due to the systemic nature of the condition.

Signs and Symptoms of Cellulitis:
🔴 Redness of the skin
🔥 Skin that feels hot to the touch
😫 Pain and tenderness in the affected area
😵 Feeling unwell
🤯 Headache
🤒 Fever
🤮 Nausea and vomiting
🦴 Joint and muscle aches
🥱 Fatigue

Risk Factors:
🎈Uncontrolled swelling – Stagnant lymphatic fluid can serve as a breeding ground for infection.
❌Cracked skin, cuts, insect bites – pathways for bacteria to enter the body.
🦠 Previous occurrences of cellulitis – Recurring infections increase the risk.
😷 Weakened immune systems
❌ Diabetes
🩸 Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) – Poor circulation can make infections more likely.

Prevention:
✅ Control lymphoedema swelling – Use methods that are effective for you to manage swelling.
🧴 Skin care – Keep skin moisturised, wear protective clothing, and use insect repellent.
🥦 Nutrition – Maintain good gut health to support immune function.
💊 Preventive antibiotics – For those with frequent cellulitis infections, a doctor may recommend antibiotics to prevent recurrence.

If you need support with your lymphoedema, or have any questions or concerns about this condition, please do not hesitate to reach out.
