Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, a time to recognise the traditional custodians of the Earth and to celebrate their diverse cultures.

This years theme, 'Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact', reminds us that Indigenous communities in voluntary isolation are better able to protect their disappearing languages and traditions, which in many cases have been passed down orally for thousands of years.

The estimated 476 million Indigenous people living across the world are made up of over 5,000 distinct groups, each with their own unique language, culture, traditions and history.
