Sciatica Condition Sciatica is a condition where there is pain felt in the sciatic nerve . The sciatic nerve is the longest in the body starting in the lower back and running down through the buttock , hamstring and into the lower leg . It originates from nerve roots in the spinal cord that pass out between the disc spaces from the spinal section L4 , L5 and S1 and join up to form the sciatic nerve . Sciatica is when someone is experiencing pain at any point in the sciatic nerve . It is more common for someone aged between 30-50 . The sciatic nerve controls sensation and function to the leg and foot . In sciatica , pr*****ed or ' slipped ' discs tend to bulge and press on the intervertebral nerve ( s ) . This pressure irritates the nerve causing referred pain . Sciatica can also be brought on by sitting on a hard surface causing the leg to go to sleep ; this is also a form of sciatica . Most cases of sciatica resolve by themselves within six weeks to three months . Sciatica can also be caused by narrowing of the nerve tunnel between discs due to osteoarthritis . People who suffer from disk degeneration as a consequence of ageing tend to be troubled the most by sciatica . It is always good to remember that sciatica is caused by an underlying condition and hence is only the secondary body ailment / symptom . Cause Because sciatica is a secondary condition the cause can vary . Essentially understanding the cause is to determine what is compressing or aggravating the nerve , as this is what is causing the nerve sensation called sciatica .
