A 1,000-year-old onion and garlic remedy just beat modern antibiotics in the lab.
A medieval medical recipe has stunned scientists with its ability to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Known as "Bald's eye salve," the 1,000-year-old remedy combines garlic, onion, wine, and cow stomach extracts.
Originally found in an Anglo-Saxon text called Bald’s Leechbook, the mixture was tested by researchers at the University of Nottingham and was found to eliminate up to 90% of MRSA—one of the most dangerous superbugs—in lab and animal models.
What’s more remarkable is that none of the ingredients worked individually; only the complete, faithfully reconstructed mixture showed this potent antibacterial effect. The ancient remedy proved more effective than modern antibiotics, even against biofilms—dense bacterial colonies that are notoriously hard to treat. While scientists are still working to understand exactly how it works, the discovery opens new doors in the fight against antibiotic resistance, a global threat projected to cause 300 million deaths by 2050.
