International Day of Play ✨

Play is essential in children learning about the world around them in a meaningful and creative way.

Quote has been taken from Dr Kate Renshaw and her advocacy on the importance of play.

A Play Therapy session involves a lot more than just the session itself. Particularly in a school setting, where you can find yourself in running to the other side of the school to pick up a child for their session.

Set up and resetting the playroom are equally as important and can vary depending on the nature of the therapeutic intervention being used. In Play Therapy, children do not need to pack away which is can often come as a shock to schools and parents. While we want children to learn to pack away their toys and show respect for their environment, in play therapy we want children to be able to leave the room having left any feeling or experiences behind with them. In play therapy, we are the container that holds the child’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

In a school, discussions can be held regularly with teachers which is not something as easily accessible when working in a different setting.

Note taking is an essential component of the play therapy process as it allows therapists to record and track progress. These are confidential and stored securely.

It’s easy for us to look at play and think children don’t need it or should rather be learning. What we forget is that when children play, they are learning the key social, emotional and cognitive skills that will support them for the rest of their lives.

As Play Therapists, people assume that we just ‘play with children’ when in reality, is so much more than just playing.

HELLO ✨ It’s been a minute since I’ve posted, moving countries has certainly been a transition BUT I’m ready to dive back into all things Play.

As Play Therapists, I find we’re constantly having to advocate for ourselves and communicating that we don’t just play with children. That in fact, Play is an incredibly powerful tool for children in all aspects of their growth and development. I’ve made this infographic to help communicate the his, using Shaeffer and Drewes 2014 Therapeutic Powers of Plat: 20 Core Agents of Play.

In March I had the absolute joy of participating in Kate Renshaw's Teachers Optimal Relational Approach (TORA) facilitator training.

For those who have not heard of the TORA, it is a universal framework that provides teachers with the practical skills to support the mental health and wellbeing of children. This approach empowers teachers to use concrete and accessible skills to foster relationships, support change and development of their students in everyday life.

I think the TORA is an invaluable intervention in schools that can create stronger relationships and understanding between teachers and students.

Children LEARN through PLAY! Play is powerful and is the primary way children learn about their world. When children play, they are not simply having fun, they are making sense of and navigating experiences in the best way they know how. In the wise words of Garry Landreth "play is their language and toys are the words."

So special to be part of the TORA training and cannot wait to share this with future schools!
