Last night we held our first ever Meditation class!

The first of a series of 6 evenings, week 1 introduced our small group of participants to a brief history of meditation followed by a guided muscle relaxation meditation.

Week 2 will build on week 1, introducing another style of meditative practice for participants to practice at home.

If you missed out on this first course, and would like to learn about this ancient practice and itโ€™s benefits on your overall well-being, we will be running a second Introductory course in November.

Our muscles have an important role in our lives, they are what allow us to move around and perform the activities that we enjoy and give meaning to our lives.

Therefore, maintaining strong muscles not only is important to maintaining both a good quality of life as well as a good social life with family and friends it can also have far reaching benefits to our long-term health, as strong muscles aids in reducing the risks of chronic diseases and maintaining good bone health as we get older.

Try to aim for 2-3 non-consecutive days of muscle strengthening exercises each week.

Regular exercise participation has many important benefits, one of these being improved quality of life!

Keeping yourself fit and strong will assist you to maintain your independence, particularly as you age and help you to get the best out of life ๐Ÿ’ช

The benefits of exercising and thus improving oneโ€™s health are numerous, chief among these is regular exercise reduces oneโ€™s risk of chronic diseases like CVD, type II diabetes, cancer and evidence even shows that exercising and improving your health can aid in the protection from cognitive conditions like dementia and Alzheimerโ€™s disease no matter the stage of life one is at.

However, the benefits are not solely restricted to the prevention of chronic conditions, exercising and improving your fitness can also improve things like your sleep quality, mental health, mood, cognitive function even our ability to learn and socialise with our friends and family along with maintaining a good quality of life and independence as our bodies are able to continue to perform the activities we love as we get older.

Then why are so many so hesitant to participate in regular exercise to reap these rewards that come with improved fitness???

Well to many, there is the common belief that to get all these benefits they need to be doing exercise for hours upon hours every day.

This however is not true, yes, the more we exercise the more benefits we will get but you do not have to become a โ€˜slaveโ€™ to exercise.

Current recommendations suggest that adults should participate in at least 30 minutes of regular physical activity on most, preferably all days of the week.

However, for some even this is a tall ask finding 30 minutes in our busy schedules each day. Fortunately, this time can be broken up into smaller, more manageable bouts of even just 10 min spread across the day. Even just these small bouts are shown to promote the same benefits described below. It does not even matter what you do any form of physical activity will start to promote these benefits, having a walking lunch at work, parking a bit further away and walking on the school drop off/pick-up or even taking the stairs instead of the elevator can get you started on the journey to better health.

So, this Exercise Right Week 2022 try to find your reason to move and get a kick start on your journey to improved fitness.
